For small dogs, a Boppy is a wonderful thing. This is a crescent-shaped pillow sold for putting around one's waist for a small baby.
But it works great for both holding a small dog in your lap (it provides them some support and different ways to sit and lie down), and a small bed. And it's a lot cheaper than the featured bed in this post. Sold through Babies R Us and other retailers.
