Using Fox 411's logic anyone that makes a lot of money is a genius. Does that inlcude super-models, pro athletes and a lot of Hollywood actors, or only the celeb ass they're kissing that day?
It is interesting that bunch of you are making claims as if they are backed up by statistical research but provide no proof of such data. At the same time, some of you also argue that the article doesn't provide enough information in this area. Here are some examples that I find very contradictory in your behavior:
There are quite a few claims about the quality and number of American IT workers. Do you know many IT workers? Are you an IT worker yourself? If so, in what city and have you recently had to look for a job? If not, where did you get your info? This will help us put your posts in context.
Someone states that American students are just too lazy to work hard enough to study science and compete with foreign students. Can you back that up? Have you even spoken to a student selecting their major? Even better, speak to 1000s before you condemn them all.
A few posts have claimed that Mr. Besser has outdated skills, wants an unreasonable salary or should move to where the jobs are. You don't know the man or his personal life and the article doesn't provide this info. These assumptions are just stupid.
Thousands of unfilled programming jobs in Chicago? I only found 1,100 "software" jobs on hotjobs for Chicago and all the suburbs. Let's assume they're all real jobs and not bait jobs used by recruiting firms to get resumes. Maybe the other thousands of jobs aren't filled because they aren't posted anywhere.
Finally, quite a few of you base your statements on personal experience. You should keep in mind that your experience in one or two companies in one city does not reflect the state of the entire IT industry. You can speak to people in different groups within the same commpany and get incredibly different opinions on the quality of techies out there and within the company. I know quite a few people at Microsoft and they all have different takes on these things. This anecdotal evidence is really meaningless to the rest of us.
In my opinion, companies are going to do what they can to get cheap labor. That may mean making bogus claims about American workers to get legislation passed. It's actually kind of interesting that you guys believe the companies on this case. Do you often believe companies that want laws changed to help them out? Do you believe the oil companies when they say that record profits are not related to record gas prices at the pump? Do you often believe companies in general?
And of course the people that will possibly be hurt by the change will complain. Why does this surprise you? It's a natural reaction. It doesn't mean that they are unqualified losers that want too much pay for their outdated skills. But of course you guys never complain about anything. You just go with the flow and use your superior skills to move on.
These lies aren't surprising as I've come to expect it from this administration. The surprising thing to me in all of this is the number of republicans that still remain loyal to this administration. After the lies that got us into Iraq I was positive that the American people would vote Bush Inc out of office. But of course they didn't, so why should they start telling the truth now. And before you say the Kerry wasn't a great candidate I have to say that he was and is much better than Bush.
Republicans seem to ignore the deceptions of this administration. At least the Dems had the decency to be disappointed in Clinton when the Lewinsky affair was revealed and again when we saw how he handled it. Publications like Salon even reported on it. What will it take for Republicans to criticize this administration. Colin Powell always seemed like a decent man but even he is reluctant to publicly disagree with these guys. Can't one high profile Republican come off message? Is all this lying OK to them as long as they have power?
It's funny seeing the conservatives here say that dems can't take criticism. For the past few years anyone that criticized the Bush administration on Iraq or our loss of freedom was a traitor. Criticize the tax cuts and your against the middle class. Suggest a change of course in Iraq and you want to cut and run. Basically, if you don't blindly support every policy from the republicans you are against America. The reason a lot of us don't like this piece is that we've read Paglia before and see this as more of the same. Also, we actually read the interview and understood it. The new content, like her comments on Condi Rice and on Bush's poor communication skills, is pretty weak coming from an "intellectual".
I guess I know why so many republicans like this interview. They saw an article critical of the dems and assume it's great. It had big words too, so the person interviewed must be right. Reading the article and thinking about it would be too much work. It's easier to just be told what to think and then find random articles that confirm it for you.
