All Hail the Great God TEAKETTLE
[Read the article: The flying spaghetti monster]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I think the thing thing that upsets people most about Dawkins is he threatens to expose our intellectual weakness and also gives that sense that maybe we have been lied to since day one.
Regarding the comment about the "Golden Rule"... that is a concept that was undoubtedly written down when we starting posing religious rules - but to say it was not in existence before that time is disingenuous. It follows a simple rule of co-existence; treat others the way you would like to be treated or get your ass kicked or lose your priveledges.
Question faith - it's the only way to keep yourself honest.
Peace.

GOP and Thee
[Read the article: GOP congressman: Abu Ghraib was just a "sex ring"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This simply illustrates the complete lack of empathy members of the GOP have for meatsacks everywhere.
What we need to organize is a junket for all people who follow his line of thinking - let's bring them to Bahgdad and have them spend a few days enjoying the pleasure palace that is Abu Ghraib.

Waffling
[Read the article: The flying spaghetti monster]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The great god TEAKETTLE once spoke to me and said I should not believe in monotheism... he is a very obtuse god and I asked why. Told me that was a stupid question. I was hurt but then realized I was talking to a tea kettle and then I felt silly.
I didn't like feeling silly so I went and beat up the neighbor across the street.
All Hail TEAKETTLE! The universe has meaning once again!

Misguided faith
[Read the article: The flying spaghetti monster]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]to Untermensche... I believe what Dawkins means in his view against unquestioned faith is not that it is wrong per se, but that people do not even take the energy to question whether it could be wrong, could be taken out of context, could be hijacked to suit self-interests.
Culturally everyone is born into a certain set of issues, or criteria for the society which they now inhabit. It is passed down - and that does not necessarily mean it is bad but it does not mean that it is always correct.
Think about the rise of organized religion and what it has meant over the centuries. It gives people peace in their short chaotic lives and it also is a very good tool for crowd control.
We wouldn't be discussing it if we weren't aware of our mortality - but we are and we think and it hurts.
Now... who's up for a spot of tea?!?

yes but... wrong
[Read the article: The flying spaghetti monster]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Fanatics like Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao may have taken on the mantel of aetheism - or the appearance of it to take down the regimes they followed but you can guarantee they didn't have a real intellectual bent to their craven thirst for power and control.
They - and their kind can be found to this day in secular and religious societies.
Being aetheist, or agnostic does not strip you of your humanity. The same cannot be said of some religious sects.

Because Mike...
[Read the article: The flying spaghetti monster]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Untermensch - for one - you are far too verbose for my fingers to your prolific logic statements. Secondly I would trust you are using that "handle" as a way of stating who are/where you are coming from and not in the derogatory origins of it's meaning.
So - to humanity... it is not a matter of faith, or divine grace, or inherent spiritual blessing that we treat each other with respect (most often), cry at others pain, laugh with friends over a joke, or any other thing we do that makes us get along with each other. That we attribute these characteristics to a higher power can be construed as naive, narcissistic, arrogant or simply ignorant.
Religion - in my humble opinion - is a cultural crutch to which we cling in order to make sense of our lives. I am not saying life is not fantastic and lacks meaning... it is simply not the realm of TEAKETTLE (or whatever moniker you chose).

And so another "Lobbyist" is born
[Read the article: Rumsfeld to voters: You just don't understand]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Good riddance to bad trash... let's just hope Dick goes scurrying out the door after him so he can be locked out as well.

Rovin' on...
[Read the article: Is Karl Rove on the way out?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]IT's A TRAP!!! Don't fall for it! Karl probably planted the rumour himself.
Ick - even typing his name makes me feel dirty.

[Read the article: Let them eat cake (or a Yule log or cookies shaped like Barney)]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]We are fighting those desserts here so our troops don't have to fight them over there! Mrs. Bush is doing her part at least!!
Now if the girls can just distract the lefist media with some crazy antics in South America...

Good Riddance...
[Read the article: John Bolton, or Bush's bad bet]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]To bad rubbish! John - take care. Hope your stock in Halliburton sees you through your coming unemployment.

Bush league
[Read the article: Message: I listen]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...boy - what an appropriate description of GW's management style.
This is typical of somebody who is a manager - not a leader. Pretend you are going to listen to opinions and then go about your business.
It would take empathy and intelligence to do what he proposes.
-
Thanks George...
[Read the article: No good choices]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Thanks a lot. With your blundering and posturing and complete lack of understanding of the greater world that surrounds you we are now in place that feels like the olden days when nuclear (or is it nucular?) annihilation (sp?) was the blanket of fear we wrapped ourselves in.
Oh how dissappointed your old man must be in you.

Riddle Me THIS Mr. Snow!
[Read the article: Tony Snow, body counts and "impressionistic answers"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]How many "insurgents" we kill are the enemy? How many Iraqis we kill are "insurgents"? How many of our kids that die or get maimed are we going to honor as great heros of "freedom"?
Makes one wistful for the obfuscation on little Scott McClellan and/or Ari.

For SHAME...
[Read the article: The terrorist you've never heard of]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]How do any of the people involved in Mr. Padilla's incarceration sleep at night?! My guess is they simply believe that they are doing what they are told and it's not their place to question the reasons why.
WELL GUESS WHAT!!! It IS everybodies place to question and EXPECT reasonable answers from government officials; whether they be elected or appointed!
What a disgrace to this nation and the law with which we purport to live by.
Mr. Padilla may have been guilty of stupidity at some point but by now nearly everyone involved with his persecution is guilty of treason to some degree or another!
