Perhaps their differences

are what inspired Guggenheim to bring the three together. Three very different approaches to the guitar, not 'the three best guitarists' which, as we've seen, brings out the haters.

The main reason Americans don't get it,

in my view, is that we've bought into the lie that somehow capitalism and democracy are synonymous.

July 4th in Wasilla

I just got back from the 4th of July parade here in Wasilla where the military had a strong presence, as always, along with local businesses and organizations--scout troops, cheer squads, antique cars, local churches. The highlight, though, is the parade of firefighters, fire trucks, and rescue vehicles. The American Patriot party is holding a TEA (Taxed Enough Already) party this afternoon at Wasilla Lake park. (Interesting in a state without an income tax.) Their float was followed by two men carrying rough beam straddled by a figure that had been tarred and feathered, and around its neck was a sign that said 'Liberal Politician' within a struck-through red circle. Their banner noted that the US Constitution is inspired by God for the betterment of all His children.

I'm sitting at my computer not too far away from Wonderland Park in Wasilla where a church choir from Texas is singing about Jesus' lovingkindness. A couple of thousand people are there right now, feasting on free hot dogs and bottled water in ice filled kiddie pools. Sarah did not make an appearance, as far as I know.

Wasilla is like a lot of small towns, and I think it's a mistake to think of Palin in Red vs. Blue terms. Hers is a populist appeal, and that she's being counted out by establishment only adds to her credibility among her base.

I gotta go. The mayor is announcing the winners of the parade-float contest.

Did any of the critics actually read the arguments and the decision?

The widespread characterization that Osborne is being denied access to DNA testing that might prove his innocence is completely and utterly wrong. I'm no conservative and have been disappointed by Obama's overall lassitude, but the kneejerk so-called liberal reaction to the decision is simply either incorrect, uninformed, or ideologically motivated.

The case and the decision are not related to cases of prosecutorial or police misconduct where DNA evidence was withheld to gain a conviction. In other words, this is not an Innocence Project case, though the NYT wants to conflate the two and slam the Obama admin. The issue is procedural and the DNA is simply the content. In the oral arguments, it was made clear that Osborne had and still has access to the DNA - but not without consequence. Under current Alaska practice, Osborne can have the DNA tested but if it corroborates the guilty verdict, he'd also be found guilty of perjury. His argument is that he should have access without any penalty should his DNA be found to match. Again, read the oral argument and decision: Osborne had and has access to the DNA, but not without consequence.

I'm not even a lawyer, Glenn, but I'm surprised that you would side so quickly move to the broader ideological condemnation of the Obama admin (which I generally agree with) but overlook the particulars of the case.

Can't have it both ways, Wingnut

As I learned in my liberal arts education, correlation is not causation, so if you want to argue that the stock market went up because of Bush's redistribution of wealth from the lower and middle classes to the ownership class (tax cuts) or that Libya dropped its nuclear--oops, nukular--program because of Bush's clear-eyed prosecution of (an illegal) war, you also gotta accept that the stock market tanked because of his policies and that North Korea's belligerence skyrocketed because of his foreign policy ineptness.

You don't get to have it both ways.

But isn't that the precise function of ideology--as all wingnuts know on the right or the left--that you don't have to pay attention to the complexity of a situation and you do indeed get to have it both ways.

Scapegoating Videogames

Just reverse the logic to see how nonsensical it is to assert that videogames 'cause' violence: Does playing a limpid game about ponies and flowers make anyone more peaceful?

Reverse the logic about art in general: Does experiencing 'good' art (like reading Shakespeare) make anyone more moral? Nope.

If you'll remember, Hitler wanted to be an artist and was a fair watercolorist before he got into politics. (And, yes, I know I've stooped to Godwin's law, but only in a finely tuned way.)

A good first step

would be prosecuting those in the big Wall Street firms who hid their losses and ran their companies into the ground. A second would be require full accountability and transparency during this ridiculous 'bailout.' A third would be to require the Wall Street geniuses to share the fate of their companies and require their personal bankruptcy when their companies tank rather than rewarded their idiocy with bonuses.

If you really want to get pissed off, read Matt Tiabbi's most recent in Rolling Stone: .

Fuck AIG and the rest of them. There is not credit crisis. There is a greed crisis and a lack of financial justice in the US. How about we all withhold our taxes come April 15? If 50 million Americans did that, do you think we'd have Washington's attention?
