lord it's frustrating to read letters that ponder why ferraro's comments were "racist." this isn't just about obama, people. it's about the old racist notion that if you're a person of color, and if you're successful, well, hell, you must be an affirmative action baby! obama is where he's at because he's smart, has a compelling message and narrative, and has run an inclusive and positive campaign. the clinton campaign has decided by turns to label that message as a fairy tale and obama's supporters as naive cultists. but that wasn't going far enough. now obama must be labeled a "black" candidate even though he has assiduously stayed away from that categorization, running instead on a unity platform. so what we have here is a clinton machine strategy to tar obama as an uppity, unqualified "black" candidate (even though he is of mixed parentage, but for too many americans the "one drop rule" still applies) who is peddling a pipe dream to a bunch of starry-eyed morons. it is pure cynicism and race-baiting. and it's insulting to those of us, male or female, black or brown, who have worked very hard to succeed in spite of our race or gender. it's damned depressing to see where this once bright political season has wound up thanks largely to the clinton machine's sleazy tactics.

with all due respect, shawn, what would YOU know about hispanics and their feelings about richardson's support of obama. we are not in lockstep support of clinton. many of us, especially younger, better educated latinos, support obama and are thrilled that mr. richardson has endorsed him. and i think that mr. richardson won't have to worry about the governorship since i'm hoping that obama will select him as veep, in which case mr. richardson will be instrumental in bringing latinos around. so don't go making blanket statements that you've pulled out of...thin air.
