[Read more letters about this article: Here]monkeys serve as reservoirs for the disease. in areas WITHOUT you can eradicate, in areas WITH, like South America and Africa, you can't. the only *indication* Kirsten (Kirsten Weir) gave for this is the one sentence, "Malaria is a complex disease caused by a parasite with a complicated life cycle." geoffegan_ caught her (in another context) with "can we have the most basic journalistic standards[?]" but sisofphil's "let's not forget those lefties who want to blame the Darfur genocide on global warming." misses it all. the original dispute between the "arabs" (herders) and the "blacks" (farmers) was the lack of grazing caused by the ongoing drought. perhaps this wasn't caused by global warming, but those folks had been getting along for centuries with a strongly interconnected ties. now however there's not enough water and the herdmen need the farmers land. as an exception that proves the rule, rachel was a girl.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]they did fine with the silkworm. with saddam (and soon, the U.S.) out of iraq, perhaps iran would flex its hegemony over the whole region. with that 10 year oil agreement, china would be on its side. russia? it has its own oil, it would be more than satisfied if saudi's oil is taken off the market. who knows how this will come out? THAT was the problem going in. israel? no i don't think it would be in trouble, iran has bigger fish to fry and it doesn't want a war where it would get hurt. perhaps israel will ally itself with the sunnis of saudi? anything you can imagine can happen, it's that unstable. i don't think kamiya would favor an impossible two state solution. who would be the second state? that mother of all fecund beggars, palestine? no, he probably favors a ONE state solution, like Tony Judt (you can always find a jew as a second for *any* opinion).

Ford bails out the S&L's. Greenspan bails out LTCM. Clinton bails out the mexican bondholders. the Fed is now hard at work bailing out the hedge funds. after a century, people get fed up. when it starts to smell like a french or russian revolution might occur someone like FDR co-opts and props up. saves the investor class by giving something to the peons. then slowly, it starts up again - a thinker class emerges explaining why everyone eventually benefits by exploitation.

my pit bull story

[Read more letters about this article: Here]it was night. it was summer. i was sitting on a bench next to a HUGE pit bull the size of a small bear between me and the owner. he was licking my face. maybe he liked my alcoholic breath (my wife didn't, that, and that i am talkative as well as fearless when drunk made me go to the nearby projects where people sit out on hot summer nights and talk). suddenly the pit bull stopped licking my face. he went into high alert. no movement except for electric tension in the air. i got up. i'm no cesar millan. i am not going to dispute who is pack leader. i see the owner looking downcast. i ask him what is wrong? he says i didn't thank him for the cigarette i had asked for, before. that was all it took for the dog to go into kill mode. i told him, my kids tell me that all the time and we shook hands. i went back to my seat, more to prove something to myself than the dog, who wasn't kill ready anymore but no face licking either. a few minutes later i left, having learned something. these dogs can make mistakes. after all they aren't human, they can't be reasoned with or begged or bribed or simply left. i think "dog love" is something we should have gotten rid of when we left *our* packs, but so many people love them, you just have to accept them. but realize, if you want a big dog, what you really want to do is to intimidate. if you are that fearful it's more honorable to buy a gun and do your own dirty work, not hire a hitmandog to do it for you.
