serious misreading is a specialty of david buckley
[Read the article: "Formosa Betrayed": Online, like never before]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]the main question i took was to question the difference between the taiwan and china "omelette". yes, *perhaps* it's economic - in which case your hope is justified. on the other hand it very well might be the intense connection with the governments of the west, there no such hope is available.

Debra Dickerson is a single black mother earning an honest living
[Read the article: Michelle Obama's sacrifice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]give her a break! she doesn't believe everything(anything) she says (see pg 5 for my "explication du texte") but she *has* to provoke a reaction. otherwise, bing! no sale. she's just the latest in a long line of black women who have discovered "shtick" sells. i remember about 15 years ago there was an old black woman with a crazy black and silver hat who would come on TV and hawk books about the evils of miscegenation. since i am married to a jamaican, i'd watch and get mad. then one day she was on with a really nice black and white couple. i could see from the twinkle in her eye that she wasn't really against them - she was just earning a living. who knows how many people she was supporting? like fox news, debra dickerson is ENTERTAINMENT. i suppose, if nothing else can rouse you from your torpor...but really, have some sense of the world - and how *hard* it is to make a living. if you find something that sells, you repeat it. after all, the bills are repeated.

the way it works, Queen of the May, if you want to comment on the letters
[Read the article: Michelle Obama's sacrifice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]you must read them. and if you did, you'd find that they vehemently disagreed(which is what debra *counts* on!), but that's not what walsh objected to, which was something that could cause *fear*. being called "dummy" doesn't. just a for instance, i got called "jackass" and "debra's sidekick" - this is not *pleasant* but it was no call for alarm either - not even enough for a write back. this itself is not a pleasant letter to read, eh queenie? but still, you SIGNED YOUR NAME. you didn't huddle behind the anonymous shield, so good for you. you stand behind your (mistaken) opinion.

she's Catholic because she FEELS Catholic
[Read the article: What does a girl have to do to get excommunicated?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]it's part of her IDENTITY. like being a woman and being american and whatever else is part of her identity. i don't want her drummed out of her church. and it is HER church, just as much as it is the other billion. all i can talk about, factually, is my *own* identity. half of american jews don't believe in god - that's about as far away as you can get from doctrine - yet they think of themselves as jews. religion is more than a set of beliefs, it's a culture, a people, a connection to our families. we are (most of us) american. some want to burn bush (taking the bible literally). some hate america. yet we still think of ourselves as american. it's a complex thing. she thinks of herself as catholic. it's AMERICA. you don't have to go in for a prescribed set of beliefs to belong. you don't have to be saved to be christion. the pope is not an ayatollah - no matter how much he would like to be (ahh, the good old days). before you wrench from her something so intrinsic, you ought to golden rule. let her be.

first there was china, which fought a couple of wars with india
[Read the article: The tortuous road to Tehran]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]then india, which fought a couple of wars with pakistan. then pakistan which supported and controlled the taliban and is currently blowing up shiite mosques. are you surprised that iran wants a bomb? it's not against the U.S. and it's not against israel. and they won't let terrorists have it. why? they *have* a state - and they like it the way it is, intact. if i were given a choice, i'd rather the U.S. have sole possession of the bomb. why? i live here and it's unlikely the U.S. will bomb its own territory. but is it worth fighting over? i say no. iran is not a threat. pakistan is more of a threat. in fact a "mexican" standoff between iran and pakistan has a lot to recommend it. back to the subject. the only country that didn't receive (american) complaints about developing the bomb was the only country that didn't need it - china. why?

(i'm trying to think of differences) taiwan and S korea
[Read the article: "Formosa Betrayed": Online, like never before]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]didn't set up dynasties. N korea did (and i believe singapore too (weikuboy, is this so?)) singapore is a "sort of" democracy, but it hasn't gotten less authoritarian. it has a difficult racial mixture, though, roughly one third each malays, chinese and indian. malasia has the same problem - and a similar authoritarian government, though more muslim-malay than chinese. what does mainland china have? does it have "family" control - or "party". all these democracies seem fragile - and dependent on good economic conditions. but i'm going way out of my depth of knowledge.

i used entertainer in the broadest sense, ancient
[Read the article: Michelle Obama's sacrifice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]it's a business. in that business debra is a success. salon is *trying* to be a success (it still loses money). i don't know about you - perhaps you have a trust fund going back to...ancient assyria. but most of us have to earn a living. she does. and How she does! all she has to do is type! from home! since i don't think she is serious (see pg 5), it is entertainment. like o'reilly or colbert or bush(his entertainment stings a little, though). i thought i'd just cool the thread down a bit by calling it entertainment. here's her trick. she picks a point of identity that people feel strongly about (race, gender). coulter does the same - and with the same result, they sell. since she is supporting a child i wish her the best and perhaps assume too much. that she is concerned mostly with helping her kid, not helping herself, like coulter. for all i know, she could be horrible. but, to tell the truth, i wish i had her readership. i'd buy my wife a house and she'd be happy and proud. (they are up to $600,000! in Queens!)

[Read the article: Michelle Obama's sacrifice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]and why not? salon LOSES money. salon NEEDS money. without MONEY, no SALON.
