Mike Barnicle

Ever since he was fired from the Boston Globe for stealing jokes from George Carlin without attribution (aka., plagiarism) I basically don't listen to a word he says. The fact that he now writes for the Boston Herald solidifies my contempt for him.

Verbs and nouns

I had another English prof who was on a personal crusade against "enthused." He argued one can be "filled with enthusiasm," but "enthused" is not a word. I lost count of the times I heard his rant on this subject in one semester alone.

I try to be open-minded about these things, but the day "irregardless" becomes a real word, I'm gonna lose it.

It's kind of funny

that a forum discussing "warped reality" would morph into a disussion on the do's and don'ts of the English language. I often feel like discussions here end up a lot like the fight scene at the end of Blazing Saddles (not that this one would be the best example...).

Word authoritarians/fascists

The worst ones I've known--again with the anecdotal evidence--were folks from blue collar/working class backgrounds who had tremendous chips on their shoulders about their educational backgrounds and lack thereof. In particular I had a girlfriend who was notorious about calling out her "overly-educated" co-workers and friends for their grammatical transgressions. She was sharp, and nothing got past her. It got really old, I'll tell you that much. To her, there was no such thing as a "typo."

Shooter the liar

"Gee, another juiced poll in favor of Democrats."

It's not fair to call you intellectually dishonest or stupid anymore. You declared that the poll Glenn cited was "juiced" with no reason to claim such other than your own prejudice against information that is damaging to the Republican leadership, or whatever view you and they are espousing that day. Your headline to your post is an out and out lie. You didn't just call it into question, you stated it to be something it was not.

You come here in the morning and throw out a molotov cocktail like that, then leave for what I can reasonbly assume is your daily six-hour Rush-Hannity fix, then you come back after everyone has said their peace and left, only to throw out even more dishonest assertions, red-herrings and strawman arguments now that no one's around to bother to argue with you anymore.

I have no idea how you come to view an admission that I might be wrong about the poll methodology as a dishonest assertion.

I'll reiterate: The lie was posted at 7:51 AM. You don't even suggest you might be wrong until nearly 2:00 PM. That's a LONG time to leave such an inflamitory statement hanging there. And then, in one of your favorite tactics, you cite your "non-admission admission" as the example I cited to call you out as a liar, when in fact it was your original statement that I cited as the lie. This is classic Alberto Gonzales-style evasion. 3 card Monte! And another lie, too. Walking that fine line between dishonesty and incompetence. Which is it? It's anyone's guess!

@shooter

Dear lord, why do I bother... ?

"I went out and played a round of golf, sue me."

Life must be good when you have time for a round of golf rather than fighting the global war on terror, the defining struggle of our civilization. Keep it real, and support the troops, brother!

"I'm always amazed at the men and women who wear our uniform. Last week, before I went down to Crawford -- for a snowy Easter, I might add -- I was in California at Fort Irwin. And I had a chance to visit with some who had just come back from Iraq and some who were going over to Iraq. And it just amazes me that these young men and women know the stakes. They understand what we're doing. And they have volunteered to serve.

"We're really a remarkable country and a remarkable military. And therefore we owe it to the families and to those who wear the uniform to make sure that this remarkable group of men and women are strongly supported -- strongly supported, by the way, during their time in uniform and then after their time in uniform through the Veterans Administration.

"I tried to put this war into a historical context for them. In other words, I told them that they're laying the foundation of peace. In other words, the work we're doing today really will yield peace for a generation to come."

@Scientician

Two points on your last post.

1) If I were a betting man, I'd bet that we'll have another gay Republican outed in the next five years. Maybe more. Of course, the timing likey won't be as be as fortunate for Democrats as Foley's was.

2)What really bugged me about the Kerry/Edwards-Mary Cheney thing was that they both handeled the whole deal so ham-fistedly. Those two moments of those debates were truly cringe-worthy. I think they handled it so poorly that it became damaging. At least in my eyes that was the case.

Paranoid authoritarians

Really an excellent point - the most secretive administration ever is also the most prying and snooping. As you point out, that is exactly backwards.

Generally when someone is overly suspicious of others, it's a big red flag that they are the ones up to no good. A textbook example of classic authoritarian behavior.

That's right tiberius

you've got us all pegged.

Actually, I'm not in favor of the gun register either, but I AM in favor of having everyone get a tattoo of Bush's intitials on the back of our neck. It's not like it's 666, so I don't see anyone else having a problem with it, either.
