Who needs to bomb Afghanis?

When we can just bribe them.

U.S. defense bill would pay Taliban to switch sides

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The defense bill President Barack Obama will sign into law on Wednesday contains a new provision that would pay Taliban fighters who renounce the insurgency, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin said on Tuesday.

@Silenced

There is no parallel here between what they did and what we're doing, between why they showed up and why we did.

Obviously the Afghani people believe there's a parallel. Why waste your time trying to convince us? Convince them. I wish you luck with your mission.

Recycled War Propaganda?

You mean, like this?

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."--Hermann Goering

The wingnuts are right!

This all proves conclusively that the Democratic Party is ruled by a bunch of far-left, socialist/communist wackos. Why else would they cave-in to the GOP and big-business like this?

@squaresville

Don't let anyone ever tell you that you don't have BIG heart.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 02:32 PM

@fjpiano

You are all delusional if you think that the government that runs our wars, Amtrak, The US Post Office and Medicare (which is going bankrupt because it is run SO badly), could possibly run health care for the whole country.

Why do hate America so much?

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 02:08 PM

Well whaddya know...

Health insurer stocks spiked today after Lieberman's announcement. Surprise, surprise, surprise....

If is slithers like a snake, flicks it's tongue like a snake, and wraps itself around it's prey and constricts... it just might BE a snake!

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 01:40 PM

@stickmon

I love how people trust "for-profit" insurance companies more than they trust the federal government. They're more worried about being "ripped-off" by their government than they are by those snakes in the insurance industry. Unbelievable. What is it that they hate so much about America?

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 12:45 PM

@Wes

You're crazy.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 12:41 PM

Lieberman is right!

If we go forward with the Public Option, we won't have any money leftover for our invasion of Iran and the escalation of our occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. Plus, it's only a matter of time before we'll have to invade Pakistan and North Korea, too.

Remember, people--War first--everything else is just wasteful government spending.

I agree with Grayson on a lot of matters

and have also been amused and heartened by some of his recent comments. But I've had this fear about him that he was going to jump the shark sooner or later, and that the narcissism he so proudly wears on his sleeve would be his undoing. Anyone who calls that much attention to themselves with his sort of behavior is not someone to be fully trusted. Not with any sort of leadership role, that's for sure.

That being said, I hope he can reign in his ego and continue fighting the good fight. Even if the odds are good that he's a flash-in-the-pan.

Hoh's resignation

I wonder how many people serving in Afghanistan actually have the option to resign and come home--to just say "this is FUBAR, I'm leaving"?

All these wars...

are a perfect example of Maslow's "If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail."

Re: Robert Samuelson

It didn't take much time googling to find that Robert Samuelson has some really strange opinions; i.e., he's was recently mocked by Paul Krugman for being against high speed trains in the U.S.

He's also no progressive when it comes to energy policy:

Great.... Can I move to a Blue State now?

The Senate healthcare reform bill will include a public health insurance plan that states can opt out of...

In other words, all the REtarD states will opt out... The states with the people who actually need it the most. Oh well, better than nothing I suppose.

Back @ tempus

Well at least you still feel good about yourself at the end of the day. That's what's most important, right?

Monday, October 26, 2009 09:59 AM

@tempus

I also intend to vote AGAINST Obama come 2012 by voting for whatever 3rd party candidate is on the ballot who isn't also beholden to money or corporations. The sooner we can bring the US government down, GOP AND Dem, the better.

Yeah, I tried that brilliant strategy back in 2000. You let us know how it works out for you. I know I came away with an wonderful sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction for counting myself among the 2.74% or so of folks who decided to "stick it to the DNC."

Monday, October 26, 2009 09:50 AM

@Salter

In the last two weeks alone, Greenwald has impugned Liz Cheney and Bill Kristol not for what they believe and argue for, but for who their parents are, and reporters for the Wall Street Journal (and presumably all of the other 64,000 employees of News Corp.), because of who that paper is owned by.

This really couldn't be farther from the truth. Are your reading comprehension skills that bad, or are you pathologically dishonest?

Friday, October 23, 2009 01:29 PM

Fine...

A narcissist blogger like Glenn reads his Wiki profile every 12 minutes or so...they all do.

I now know enough about you to conclude that you're not worth engaging ever again. Good-bye.

Friday, October 23, 2009 01:25 PM

And More

After Glenn's admission in that Preface, he clearly states, "All that has changed. Completely." Pretty clear words.

Also, I think it's pretty bizarre to assert that a practicing constitutional lawyer is "not participating in our Democracy." Ludicrous, in fact.

Friday, October 23, 2009 01:19 PM

@JoeDon

That you're assuming it's STILL true?

Friday, October 23, 2009 01:02 PM

@JoeDon

Just to be clear, you are stretching Glenn's admission that prior to 2006, he "vot(ed) neither for George W. Bush nor for any of his rivals," into your claim that Glenn "never votes," and "doesn't participate in our democracy." That's a really, really big stretch, and it says a lot about you.
