Video

Not in favor of the video blogs. I come here to read. When I want to watch I turn on the TV. Plus, I usually come to Salon during my work day & I won't view video at my desk. I'm not that interested at all in watching any of the writers read their work to me or speak off the cuff, whichever it is. I won't object to Salon adding video as long as it isn't in place of the written word; when that happens, my subscription will be worthless to me.

Intros

Sometimes I feel so out-of-the-loop. I love to read but had never heard of these books, nor had I heard of this movie until now. Thanks for the introduction, Ms. Williams.

Bill D and his crazy pseudo-catholic crusading organization, I've heard about, a lot. Intellligent people just ignore him. At least, that's my advice, as a Catholic and a human being.

go read the full article

Everyone should go read the full article by Murray Wass.

There are a lot more details and it gets a bit complex, particularly with implied motivations and the things people, inluding Mr. Huckabee, said back then and what they're saying now.

The women who wrote private letters to then governor Huckabee about DuMond hadn't just been raped, they had been raped by Doumont. DuMond also was involved in a murder long before this rape case came up. He wasn't an innocent soul before this. Huckabee at the time said he thought Doumont might be innocent. In other words, he didn't believe the 17 year old girl when she said she'd been raped by the man.

Dumond

Carters12 wrote: "Oh, and I don't think he'd actually killed prior to being released by Huckabee."

I think he did. He just got away with it. Here is the bit in the Wass article:

Dumond had been previously arrested for violent acts and an attempted sexual assault of an underage girl.

In 1972, Dumond had been arrested for his involvement in the beating death of man in Lawton, Oklahoma. Court records showed that the man who was murdered had been dating an ex-wife of a Dumond friend named Bill Cherry. Enlisting the aid of Cherry's underage daughter to lure the man to a public park, Cherry, Dumond, and a third man bludgeoned the individual to death with a claw hammer.

Dumond was granted immunity from prosecution in the case in exchange for his testimony against the other two men. On the witness stand, Dumond admitted to beating the man repeatedly over the head with a claw hammer, but denied that he struck the fatal blows.

for Sean

Dumond died of natural causes while in prison on September 1, 2005. At the time of his death, Missouri authorities were readying capital murder charges against Dumond for the rape and murder of Andrasek.

read the original

Like I said, go read the original cited article.

ACOA

Cary mentioned that there is a lot of material available on the husband's birth family situation. I'll take it a step further and suggest that both the wife & husband read up on Adult Chidren of Alcoholics (ACOA). It will certainly be a good start in trying to understand the husband/father's behavior. It seems pretty obvious to me.

Gold star

two things:

1) Identify that reporter, if you can, and give him (Ed?) a gold star.

2) The Prez has been using this language about not wanting Iran to gain the "knowledge" to make a nuclear weapon. Does he really mean "knowledge" or is this code for something else? I was under the impression that the knowledge is readily available on the net. I presume the Iranians have internet access.

Ed Henry?

I'm guessing it was CNN's Ed Henry.

Procrastination

LW's answer is in his letter: "On the last book, I procrastinated so long that he gave up on getting my feedback." The LW added that he was in the doghouse for that. The question you have to ask yourself is which you prefer: doing his bidding, or being in the doghouse.

PE and SG

I'm glad to read from another poster that the DVD has Attenborough's narration. I am not enjoying Weaver's narration at all.

BTW, I tried to like Saving Grace, but I can't find the "charm" in it.

Herbs & sprouts

I've looked at that machine but it's too big for my small living space & too much $$$. My store has lots of fresh herbs. I particularly like the hydroponic basil, which will keep fresh & alive in my house for a long time.

Now if someone can figure out a way to grow fat, juicy mung bean sprouts like the kind I get at the grocery store, I'd be obliged. Or, find a way to keep the store bought sprouts fresh for more than a few days.

An Unreasonable Man

I thoroughly enjoyed the first hour as it reminded me why I have admired the man. The second hour got tougher to watch. In fact, I stopped watching as it came to the 2000 vote count. Thanks for the heads up about this program yesterday, otherwise I'd have missed it.

Brownines

I didn't know such a thing existed. I learn so much reading Salon.

Personally, I prefer the inside brownies, all gooey and soft.

cooking options

I (a female) love to cook while my best female pal hates it with a passion. The reality is that it's great to live in a time when we both can follow our preferences with ease and comfort (even if my galley kitchen feels small at times.) My favorite appliance: the dishwasher!

Single veggies

Pack your freezer with Green Giant's "Just for One!" veggie servings

Well, that's just wrong. Any single person knows that. You buy a bag of frozen veggies and dole them out as required. Better yet, go with fresh if they're in season. Single servings are such a rip-off.
