  • the fantasy life of a senator

[Read the article: Rick Santorum and the "Eye of Mordor"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I wonder if it would be fair to compare Santorum to Boromir. He's been enticed to the dark side by force of the evil eye and while Boromir was ready to sell out his friends for power, Santorum is doing the same to his country. Boromir came around and ended up taking a sword for the good guys. I wonder if Santorum would ever do that for his country.

Happily, it looks like Santorum will be losing his seat in November.

  • Confession

[Read the article: Is DeWine history? Has Harris been vindicated? Was Allen p.c.?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    K. Harris: "During the recount, so many stories were written that were outrageously false ... Democrats are shocked and upset that for six years they were made to believe a lie and they were upset over something that wasn't even true."

    Is this a confession?!

My heart skipped a beat when I first read it. I know it's not a confession on Harris' part but if not that, then I have no idea what she's talking about.

  • Fact meets fiction

[Read the article: A secret plan for Iraq?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Reminds me of an early episode of The West Wing when Josh Lyman had to fill in as Press Secretary for the day & ended up spilling the beans about the President's secret plan to fight inflation, which, of course, didn't exist.

  • Ken

[Read the article: The buck stops ... well, not here, anyway]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Ken Mehlman will say whatever he has to in order to get what he wants. Clearly he doesn't want the ad pulled.

On another note, someone mentioned yard signs not indicating party affiliation. I've been looking at the many different yard signs in my small city & not one indicates party affiliation (both Dem. & Repub. candidates are doing this). And while there are a variety of designs, they all have liberal doses of blue and white, and smaller doses of red and black.

  • Mandate

[Read the article: The president's press conference, and what Bush didn't say]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Bush said that the "ultimate accountability" rests with him, but then suggested that the time for such talk has come and gone. "That's what the 2004 campaign was about," he said."

He's alluding to that "mandate" that he believes he received from the American people by being reelected.

  • Storm aid

[Read the article: Follow the money]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Maybe he should head down to Lousiana again. I think they can still use a little help.

  • Haggard

[Read the article: Haggard: Massage, meth but no gay sex]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

He clearly wasn't paying attentiong to how Mark Foley did this. Resign, go into rehab, have your attorney fess up in a press conference, remain unavailable for at least 30 days and let others take the direct heat.

  • waterboarding

[Read the article: Fox News reveals state secrets]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I stumbled on this report on FOX while channel surfing over the weekend. while the reported did say it was a difficult experience he seemed to stress that he was as good as new once it stopped. He was highlinght the point that he felt fine afterwords, thus invoking the infamous meme that it can't be torture if there are no long lasting effects. The whole thing was nauseating.

And as someone else pointed out, he knew he was among friends. It was an entirely different mindset from someone who is a prisoner.

  • Stick in the eye

[Read the article: An olive branch or a stick in the eye?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Bipartisanship? They must think we're all idiots. The administration claimed they wanted this after the last election & it didn't last long. The only reason they're going to play up the bipartisanship concept now is so that when nothing gets done (due to presidential veto power) they can blame it all on the dems. And, no doubt, the MSM will fall for it.

  • How about this

[Read the article: Matthews on Hillary: Good point, then a weird point]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

You wanna talk about candidate speeches to their supporters and how they appear to the TV viewers? Did you see Santorum's concession speech? Yikes! The speech may have been okay but I was too busy being appalled at the family dynamics. His wife stood slightly behind him with that pasted on grin that political wives have to learn to use in all situations. Their children surrounded them, but some of them were clearly too young to have learned the stepford look yet. It was 11pm ish & there stood his little girl (about 8 years old by my accounting) clutching her doll and sobbing her eyes out. Neither parent payed any attention to her. To the other side of Rick stood two sons, one so young you couldn't really see him. Another trying very hard to be the good polictical son but he clearly was very upset, on the verge of sobbing himself. I think that at that hour and under those circumstances it might have been very appropriate for the little ones to be home in bed, or at least not on display.

  • Entertainment value at its highest

[Read the article: Fox: Just "a standard election"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

van souther, if you look carefully, this piece is in the "Arts & Entertainment" section of Salon. I, for one, was highly entertained!

Andrew, thanks for a wonderful piece. It lifted my spirits. I was feeling badly that I have to live through another term with my rubberstamping repub congressman who won by this election by the skin of his teeth.

  • idle threats

[Read the article: Lieberman on the lessons of 2006]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't think he'll convert. In two years he would have to decide again if he wants to be with the majority or minority, when the Senate loses more Repub. seats.

  • CNN

[Read the article: Fox isn't the only "fair and balanced" one]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It's a variation on the old "some people say" tactic. I can't wait for Beck to be removed from CNN Headline news.

  • Wallace hit job

[Read the article: Right, but actually winning the White House would have been nice, too]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

That would have been the right wing waterboy Chris Wallace who asked that question, and kept harping on the botched joke.
