Original article: Who's "quaint" now?

Quaint, indeed

I feel a certain amount of satisfaction in reading that new memo. Though, I have to wonder why they've decided to follow the law this time, if not at most other times. Is this the new pattern of government: defy established law, or simply make up their own, until it goes through the Supreme Court, then do what the SCOTUS determines?

It's a crazy country we live in these days.

Artificial

Maybe this is all semantics, but I tend to think of "artificial" as being non-organic based. And since these sperm were organic based, wouldn't they be considered "engineered"? Probably a moot point.

How about this guy

Anyone know anything about this guy's job?

Baker, Stuart Director for Lessons Learned $106,641

Seriously, I pulled this off the White House salary list posted with the the National Journal article. Director of Lessons Learned?

Original article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily

All-Star Game

So that's why "House" wasn't on last night. I saw some glitzy graphics but couldn't quite figure out what they were for & I wasn't interested enough to stick around to find out. Now that I know what it was, I'm glad I read a book instead.

Newspapers

If some of our representatives spent as much time reading newspapers as they spend trying to get mentioned in them, they might learn a few things that the rest of us already know.

No photos, please

He doesn't want any photographic evidence of the first time in almost six years that the Congress refused to do his bidding. He clearly considers it a lowpoint in his presidency. I wonder if he had any witnesses.

balance

Snow quote: "inappropriate for the federal government to finance something that many people consider murder."

Apparently this White House attitude doesn't extend to the war in Iraq.

Scarlet R

Another clue from the interview: "It's not an ideological matter. Even as he berated the president, the candidate allowed that he opposes a pullout from Iraq, agrees with Bush's veto of human embryonic stem cell research, and supports constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage and flag burning."

Why is this guy afraid to be ID'd? Political cowardness, it seems to me. Furthermore, what's the point of airing his views if voters in his state can't know them? Are they supposed to guess what he supports? Grr Argh, politicians!

Original article: Conrad Burns is on fire

Burns

Burns knows the ranchers can vote for him, while the out of town fire fighters can't.

answering a question

Patrick Forman asked: "If you think abortion is morally acceptable, would it have been morally acceptable for your mother to abort you? I guess we will find out who the real hypocrites are now."

Answer: Yes, I do.

I'm with Kate on this one

Patrick Forman wrote:

"For those of you who answered my previous question in the affirmative (Do you think it would be morally acceptable for your mother to have aborted you?), I'm not going to pretend that I understand where you are coming from. "Moral" must have a different meaning to you and me. I can't imagine grinning with approval at my own murder - perhaps you are answering "yes" to stand by your argument, rather than with real sincerity?"

I don't get it Patrick. You asked a simple question & I gave an honest reply but you now say that I wasn't being truthful simply because my response doesn't fit with your sense of right & wrong. If you were merely asking a rhetorical question, you should have said so.

Amen chorus

Tony Snow speaks a different langauge than I do. Can someone explain what he meant by the "Amen Chorus" comment in that context? Thanks.

Original article: Is airport security futile?

Security

A terrific article from Mr. Smith. This should be the headline piece on Salon today.

Think Progress (thinkprogress.org) has a video clip up. I don't know if it's the entire event.

The Closer

I only started watching this show in its second season and I have many of the same complaints as the reviewer, but still I'm hooked! Brenda Lee annoyed the heck out of me at first, but now I just accept her for who she is. What I wish most of all, though, is that we could get more character development of the detectives who work with her. They all have intriguing personalitites but we only get a glimpse. And one of the nice things about watching "The Closer" is that "Saved" comes on right after!

Kos

I loved the headline "Moulitsas makes an "excellent living." since when are the Republicans against someone earning a good living? At least Moulitsas is doing it legally.

Language

Harris said: "...it's going to be a very frightening proposition in 2008 in the presidential elections because whoever wins Florida will win the presidency."

So according to Ms Harris, either she or Nelson will be the next president of the US. I shudder to think about it.

Photo Op Prez

So these people want us to only remember the President for a 2 minute photo op? Fat Chance.

I thoroughly enjoyed Cary's response to this silly letter. It lightened my mood.

Over kill

Tom and Katie can live however they like, as far as I'm concerned. I just don't want to have to read about it/hear about it every time they leave the house.

The only movie of Tom's that I thought he did an excellent job playing the character was "Rain Man." In every other film I've seen (& certainly I've not seen all his films, because I finally realized I wasn't going to like them) he is too intense all the time, there's little nuance to his performances.

ABC & Bush

Speaking of the President and ABC, last night Charlie Gibson interviewed Pres. Bush on the news cast. My favorite moment was when the President referred to himself as the "Educator-in-Chief." I swear to god he did.
