I actually don't wish for women to not wear headscarves or whatever, although I'll draw the line at face covering, which I think is unreasonable in our societies. I don't LIKE headscarves, or the mentality they represent. But what I really hate is when someone in these type of discussions argues that hey, western women could actually learn something from these women who hide themselves from the male gaze. A poster implied that us western women with our distracting clothes could actually get more respect from men if we'd cover up more. Or, in a total contradiction, men would be more intrigued with us if we left not just more, but just about everything to the imagination. I think that this is a crazy way of looking at women's clothes, disrespect to sexist traditions totally intended. It's not hard to understand where western women are coming from: our view of clothing is very similar to men's view of clothing for themselves. You wear it because you think it's comfortable, appropiate and flattering. When I am asked to believe that the head to toe covered women have some sort of wisdom I don't, it kind of pisses me off. Where I live many women and even pre-pubescent girls wear this clothing, and I never see them at the pool, taking walks, riding bikes, rollerblading, playing soccer, climbing trees or having water balloon fights.
I love how these "I regret my abortion" women hightail it to the abortion clinic to take care of business, THEN make a career out of calling abortionists murderers and rapists. What a cowardly, self-serving moral code.
Thank you for so aptly calling bullshit on that old canard about people only recently discovering love. From what I have read, formal marraige is the recent concept, just as you imply. If most humans have been pairing up informally throughout history, love must have been as good a reason as any.
How ethical is it to donate sperm to your unstable girlfriend who at least is planning on raising the 14 kids who result?
I echo the letterwriter who calls the term 'national shame' hyperbole. Unthoughtful people buy into the hysteria of the perceived horribleness of public education, although most of us are products of public education. Go figure. Private schools are only better because they cull the weak students out; international educational statistics are notoriously unreliable and shouldn't be trusted at all. Even the homeschooling advocates only use testing data compiled by voluntary participants. Support public education, but stop assuming it has been proven that the schools are shameful.
Carseats save lives, but they also make it easy to forget about a sleeping baby in the back seat. Additionally, toddlers who could probably open a door and escape are trapped by the seatbelts. I feel nothing but pity for these poor parents and the poor, poor children.
I always peek into cars to see if there are babies or dogs unattended on hot or very cold days. So far I've spotted a few dogs, and the stores already had a protocol for dealing with it. I know that at least two cases I have heard of involved parents who didn't realize how fast a child can overheat in a car, and left them deliberately, so education can help in those cases. Another safeguard: the other parent can call and check that the dropoff went smoothly.
A man in my college boyfriend's fraternity is serving a prison sentence for raping 7 of his frat brothers while they were too intoxicated to stop him. One brave victim came forward, and the rest followed. The only thing those young men did wrong was trust someone who turned out to be cruel and abusive. I have been told by self defense students that these male on male rapes are far more common than people believe.
Most men are kind and decent and accept the onus of making totally sure that a woman or a man who trusts them is a willing participant. Anything else is unmanly.
We're reviving the old cliche that men invented civilization to impress women? While the women cleaned the latrines, I suppose.
I LOVE Dollhouse. I love one of the themes: the indomitable spirit of a fearless leader showing itself over and over again, despite everything her handlers do to supress her. I also love how the show takes on the lack of ethics that client of prostitutes have. And I believe that the hostility toward Dushko parallels the garden variety misogyny the show examines: a beautiful, young women is not to be taken seriously. Echo is my hero.
Are waldman and Saletan fathers? Someone ask which of their kids they would have been willingcto sell for $1000?
Motherhood is a huge deal. Women have abortions because they know what a big deal it is. It's illogical that the same women would become mothers and give their babies away. These two men need to learn what motherhood is.
