@mattcliff - "Slow news day, Alex?"

"There are wingnuts out there. Who knew?"

Know thy enemy.

I am all in favor of exposing in the regular news stream every right wing nut job "news story" out there. To ignore these "stories" only gives them legitimacy because of the "cover up" mentality.

Put this crap on page 1 and be done with it! I doubt the embarrassment will stop the perpetrators but at least the won't be able to fester their tall tales in the dark.

Thanks Alex!

The AMT is a "benefit"?

"My husband and I voted for Obama knowing that in in the future the alternative minimum tax benefit might go away, and we will pay more taxes." -- bernbart

Now there is some REAL understanding of the tax code! The AMT was adopted to INCREASE tax receipts from taxpayers that were so good at shielding income from taxes that they paid little or no taxes. Unless you consider paying more taxes a "benefit" you don't know what you are talking about!

"The alternative minimum tax operates in effect as a parallel tax system, with its own definition of taxable income, exemptions, and tax rates. Taxpayers compute tax owed under the regular and AMT systems and are liable for whichever is higher." -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_Minimum_Tax

The problem is that the AMT was not indexed for inflation and while it was designed to go after 155 high-income households in 1970. If not changed it will effect over 27,000,000 taxpayers in 2010.

WE HAVE ANOTHER WINNER!!!!

"I appreciate your sentiment in feeling it is your patriotic duty to pay taxes. In principle I certainly agree and I am happy to do my part as well. I simply do not think that people deserve to be punished for being wealthy even if they can afford it." -- melissasbatman

Taxes are "punishment"?

Where did you come up with that? I would like you to cite ONE place in any penal code, criminal code, traffic code, or any other code that says we are going to TAX someone for committing a crime.

Why don't you do a little research before making such outlandish statements?

Lies, D@mn Lies and Distortion...

Are the stock and trade of "The Wingnut". Never mind the idea that "our civil code -- comes primarily from our religious institution", it doesn't unless you count Greek and Roman theologies.

What caught my eye is the completely over the top:

"And there are real-world examples from today, such as the case of a Christian photographer who was forced by the New Mexico Civil Rights Commission to pay $6,637 in attorney's costs after she refused to photograph a gay couple's commitment ceremony."

Not what happened. Elaine Photography was fined because they sent out an email to prospective clients stating their illegal discriminatory practices AFTER being contacted by the couple. The fact that Ms Huguenin refused to photograph the commitment ceremony would likely not have caused a legal ripple.

photobusinessforum.blogspot.com/2008/02/rights-yours-mine-and-theirs.html

It took less than 5 minutes to get to the root of this "crazy talk". It is a shame that the first several Google pages were consumed with "conservative" echo chamber stories. All the more reason legitimate news organizations need to find and refute these inaccurate rally points lest they be seen as part of some sort of "cover up".

Significant improvement?

"a significant improvement over the "throw up our hands because there is nothing we can do" approach it replaced."

After billions of dollars anti-ballistic missile systems will always be less reliable than the MAD policy that has served us well for 50 years. Contrary to the boogieman theories of the neocons there is no geographic area that would dare launch a missile at the United States. To do so would assure vaporization of the launch area at the least.

This whole notion of shooting down incoming ICBMs is a solution in search of a problem. The only problem solved in 30 years was how to funnel more money to cronies in the defense industry.

To even use such an absurd example as evidence of "science" demonstrates how little the "wingnut" understands the concepts of Science.

This article is disgusting.

If this is the level of "reporting" we are headed for in the post-newspaper age trouble is ahead. Apparently Mr. Kendrick didn't even touch the phone or was involved in any way but still feels compelled to issue a negative review. Meta-reporting at its worst. How is this "smart news, smart analysis"?

It would be nice if Palm had allowed a unrestricted access to the device but the end of the 1st half of 2009 is still over 51 days away. This amount of time is still HUGE in the ultra competitive handset device market especially when Apple hasn't released their latest iPhone software version. I would submit that it is Mr. Kendrick is the one that doesn't get it.

Even worse is the content scraper "Related Posts on the GigaOM Network" where a April fools joke post is referenced; "Palm Announcement Stuns Press- Pre Cancelled; Introduces Palm Peo".

Heaven help us!

Dynamic DNS?

"I have to type https://185.123.4.5:4443 to get to my WHS box. Obviously that’s not ideal because it’s clunky and more importantly, it becomes useless the minute Verizon changes the IP address I’ve been assigned."

Obviously the is what services like dyndns.com are for. Less obvious is that if you go to the Host Services page (www.dyndns.com/account/services/hosts/) there is a listing of all your Hostnames, IP addesses and when they last updated. I check it every so often to see if any of my less often customers have wandered off...

VERY useful!
