Trollbait

Hmm, the post I'm replying to probably ought to be deleted for profanity. Nonetheless, I would like to point out that I do work in medical research and am contributing - in an admittedly rather indirect way - to the search for a vaccine and/or cure for AIDS. Like many other viruses, it's extremely difficult to combat: we don't really have any solution for the common cold, and flu vaccines have to be re-created every year and still don't always work.

Are you doing anything about AIDS?

Did You Insist on Dutch?

I find it interesting that almost everybody is so quick to blame the guy. Based on LW's "class warrior" stance, I'm guessing she insisted on going Dutch and is now blaming him for what was frankly her decision all along. I doubt anybody is "forcing" her to spend a single dime - the fact that she was so careful to avoid spilling the beans on who's being the problem implies to me that it's her.

Why is it the same poor people who bitch and moan about the way rich (and, frankly, middle class) people spend their money are the same people who insist on trying to "keep up" out of some weird pride? They claim to be so great about money, but then splurge on trying to be "equal". And then they try to say that it's the rich folks who are hung up on money issues...

You're not married. Your money is your money; spend (or save) it as you please. His money is his money; let him spend (or save) it as he pleases. Neither of you have any business telling the other what to do with your own finances. If he wants to gift you with a trip to Japan, receive it as a GIFT, and don't make up any strings; if you've got a problem with that, your class prejudice is out of control. If he wants you to pay your own way and you don't want to, just say no. If he has a problem with that, he's a control freak and you need to get rid of him.

Anger Isn't Enough

Yes, I'm making people angry...

And how many diseases has anger cured?

But you have to admit, people make TONNES of money off of people wasting with AIDS.

People make "TONNES" of money off of ED. The vast majority of the population with AIDS has no money to speak of. Funding for AIDS treatments has been problematic precisely because there isn't all that much money to be made.

Why would any sensible company want to cure any disease they profit from when they can "manage" it nicely?

So, in your little made-up world, there are no cures for anything, because that would hurt the bottom line. Luckily, you're delusional.

Original article: A cornucopia of beer

For Another Scenario

So, some foreign and micro-brews do well. Soon the big boys buy 'em out. So far, so good. But then the executives want to squeeze more profit out of their holdings - and sooner or later hit on reducing costs by making the new beers as cheaply as they make their original stuff. After a few decades of bit-by-bit cuts, they've got a selection of "flavors" all of which are manufactured the same and none of which have the richness which made them competitive.

Okay, so there'll be new micro-brews for a while, but eventually they'll figure out a way to shut down even that - quite possibly through regulation hurdles which make it too expensive to start a small, new brewery.

Anyway, just tryin' on the ol' pessimist hat.

Already Did

Maybe if we put as much energy into teaching children that fucking isn't what they ought to be doing as we put into trying to give them as many opportunities as possible to erase any of the responsibility or consequences of fucking...maybe we wouldn't have our thongs in a wedgie over non-issues like CCPA.

What do you mean, "maybe"? We put far more resources into "abstinence-only" education than into reproductive services, and guess what, people are still doing it just like they always have and always will.

Side Note

These sorts of protein drugs are generally not stable enough to go through the digestive system, which is of course specifically designed to break down proteins. This means they typically have to be injected or implanted rather than being a simple-to-take pill. This has greatly reduced widespread acceptance of such treatments, relegating them mostly to conditions for which there is no "easier" solution.

I know some people are working on microcapsules that might potentially solve this issue, but I don't think that technology has wings yet.

What Jumps Out

What really jumps out of those quotes is the immaturity. There's very little professionalism, no sense of expertise or nuance. This is not a person who ever belonged in such a serious position.

Source

A fairly exhaustive google search has failed to turn up even ONE primary attribution to the infamous MacKinnon quote. Can anybody reference a verifiable source from which I can obtain context? I couldn't help noticing that some of the Dworkin quotes are taken so far out of context as to be meaningless - they were opinions she was attributing to patriarchy, rather than positions she was espousing.

Mm-hmm

Where are all of these torch-bearing, anti-nursing hoardes I keep hearing about?

Just look down a paragraph:

...the probably likelier reasons people quit (barring a physical problem): ... limits your freedom, is a challenge to mix with employment...

Give Her Some Credit

However, since it is you asking and you suck, I will refrain from enlightening you.

At least she wasn't writing about pot for once.

Play With Fire

So, why not have the Democrats sponsor a third party headed up by Falwell and Robertson or some such? Someone megalomaniacal and evangelical who could siphon votes off from the Republicans. If this is the game that's going to be played, why not play? Perot is credited by many with helping Clinton's first win...

I like IRV, but I doubt it'll be implemented. Pity, really, it does skew towards the middle.
