  • The 10% factor

    Notorious Wes asked

Now THAT is funny......Were all his other post season masterpieces 10 percent too?

    More likely 90%

But bear in mind the Rockies owned Beckett's butt the last they met - beat him 7-1. Even assuming Beckett will have somewhat greater refinement-intensity etc. in the post-season, it isn't enough to award him more than a 10% contributory factor for last night's Rockies' debacle.

The cold hard fact is that had the Rocks only had a day's rest or so their timing wouldn't have been off to the extent it was. Correct for the absent timing and Beckett's efficacy automatically goes down. This is not to say Beckett's quality as a pitcher goes down! Read my previous post again, and you see I STILL have him winning the game by 6-2 or so.

Francis, though he denies it, was also "off". His location was abominable. Usually he masters the corners, he didn't last night. Again, that magic intangible was lost after eight days of no real play. Squad games help but they lack the intensity of REAL games. Ask the Indians!

  • Yeppers!

If, for the sake of argument, the Red Sox rape the Rockies in 4 straight, is the whole thing attributed to the lay-off?

Yeppers! It is! You see, given an 8-day layoff it will take at least SIX MORE DAYS for the Rocks' to regain the timing etc. they possessed in the last NLCS game v. Arizona.

SIX MORE DAYS - which is to say the timing is 99%~ regained - by Oct. 30, will not help them in games UP to that date. Thus, they will lose in four games - or at most five games. (By Oct. 29)

The layoff-rust writing is on the wall and I predicted this fate more than a week ago in a letter to the Denver Post.

  • A Rockies' Fan - NOT!

Explaining why you're going to lose the Series before it's even played? Wow.

The Rockies are lucky to have you as a fan.

Well, hate to burst your presumptive bubble but I am NOT a Rockies' fan. I am a Milwaukee Brewers fan, who happens to live in Colo. Were it not for the Brewcrew - beating the padres the last two gmes of the season - the Rockies would be NO WHERE right now.

Having said that, with the Brewers gone and the Rockies the only NL team left to root for, and me living in Colo. - I do have to tend apologias for the little deuces. Can't help it! It's my nature.

They were on such a hot roll, so now somebody has to find excuses for them losing that 'mojo'!

Btw, to 'WES' - I keep watching because of course I have to see my predictions fulfilled! Gives me a buzz, you know! Better than 'Red man' tobacco!

  • Rocks still removing rust

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]

Curt Schilling, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon combined to hold Colorado's potent offense to a single run for the second straight night Thursday

Yeah. Well it's obvious to me the Rocks are still removing the rust. I watched assorted strikeouts, including of Helton, Matsui, and there is no issue that lack of timining is inflating the pitching performances of the Bosox crew. How much? Who can say? Maybe at least 50% for the Japanese guy and perhaps 60% for PapaJohn.

In the other thread I predicted Colo. would go in 4 or 5 games (max) and the reason would be that by the time they got all the rust out of their bats, the Series would be over. I stand by.

Again, before irate Bosox fans crawl all over my butt, this is to take nothing from your great team, only to acknowledge an aspect or dynamic of what is influencing the outcome - a large part of which is lost timing of the Rocks. This then makes retiring them- especially by Ks and groundouts much easier. Kind of like shooting fish in a barrel.

Shooting fish in a barrel can be cool and offer a feeling of proud (albeit skewed) conquest. It's much more challenging if the "fish" are 12' Hammerheads and you are using harpoons or other 'gun devices' in the open ocean. The "conquest" then means much much more.

    Wouldn't you agree?
