  • mortgsge borrowing rule of thumb

[Read the article: Panic on Wall Street]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

the problem is not just with subprime mortgages, there was a real change in qualified borrowers lending practices also. The old rule of thumb was you qualified for double your gross income, but suddenly people were allowed to qualify for 4 or 5 times their income. A friend of mine moved to North Carolina and was shocked to see people she worked with all buying $300,000 houses. She was wondering how they did it, well when she went to the bank they qualified her for $250,000-300,000. My sister and brotherinlaw qualified for over $500,000(all of these examples are middle class individuals with secure jobs, so hardly subprime) The rationale given was with low interest rates, you could break the old twice rule of thumb (though it is interesting that those same low interest rates in the fifties and sixties did not justify such large multiples ), we have just seen the beginning of our problems, add to that, the outstanding debt on credit cards, the ride has just begun

  • The Issue is the Constitution

[Read the article: Why is the Democratic Congress so unpopular?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Iraq is a very complex issue, I don't know the solution. I would like a total pull out of troops (in a perfect world) but i don't think that is feasible at this time . But I do think there is a totally unambiguous reason for at least my dissatisfaction with the congress. they are doing nothing to protect the constitution. This administration has lied, obstructed justice and dismantled parts of the constitution. The democrats and republicans of congress are responsible . They have allowed administration officials to restate testimony when they have perjured themselves, have voting for legislation that codifies the worst excesses of the administrations abuse of the constitution. Multiple individuals he the administration should face impeachment hearing (hell if it was possible i would like impeachment hearings to be brought against most of the congress for failure to uphold their responsibility to uphold the constitution) Maybe we need a third party running on the platform to uphold the constitution

  • Freedom Watch

[Read the article: Ari Fleischer, reporting for duty!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Freedom watch has already started broadcasting commercials, I saw one this morning during the today show, they showed a soldier in a wheelchair with his wife, saying if we quite Iraq the terrorist will win, and he would go back if he could to fight to protect america's liberty. It was a frightengly effective commercial, people who don't read are going to be swayed

  • propaganda- yes ...

[Read the article: Ari Fleischer's misleading message]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

but these are very effective ads, they manipulate the heartstrings, a brilliant juxtaposition of visual and audio. Based on lies and propaganda, yes, but how do you argue or respond to a paraplegic vet, a mother who has lost a child, a wife her husband. These are the ads WE should have run to get the troops home. I think too many people on here, really don't understand the lack of analysis and insight of the general population. They don't read, they get their news from snippets and commercials (propaganda) like this does have a tremendous impact. Rant all you like about the lies of ari fleisher and this administration, the medias complicity is why we are now at a crossroad of constitutional crisis. It is the constitution, Stupid

  • Amazing people on salon

[Read the article: How can I love my Republican parents?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What I'm stuck by is the range of acceptance on this site. The maturity and understanding of the distinction between political identity and being a good person. I wonder would you see this level of acceptance on a right wing blog? Seriously are there any thoughtful and accepting conservative (right wing today i guess) sites. I miss thoughtful dialogue with conservatives, I have found that fox news and george bush have done more to polarize this country and the level of discourse than anything in my memory (and i was in college during watergate) My parents are loving, respectful and giving individuals , who are responsible for my values and ability to analyze and my love of learning. I blame Fox news for many of their frightening views (retirement and fox is a deadly combination), but the best parts of me is a result of their parenting and support. Parenting is a difficult task (impossible to do perfectly),"bad son" look at your good attributes and thank your parents for them and accept their limitations ( part of maturity is recognizing parents are just as flawed as the rest of us)
