This confusion of messengers and messages is similar to how Joan Walsh and a number of other Clinton supporters failed to recognize that sexism among some of Obama's purported supporters has little or nothing to do with the candidate himself.
A crowd of frat boys carrying signs that say "Iron my shirt" does not equate to "rampant sexism in the Obama camp" any more than an anti-semitic nutcase posting on an Obama site equates to "Obama has problems with Jews" (or Israel).
Yet nothing ever stopped Joan Walsh or any number of Clinton supporters from insisting that Obama ran a sexist campaign, or that sexism propelled him to his victory. So either Joan Walsh (and by extension Salon itself) is just as guilty as the idiotic Green Footballers, or there's a double-standard at work here.
The interesting thing about this primary fight has been watching Democrats adopt the "logic" and tactics of the Republicans they claim to hate so much. Ad hominem attacks, misrepresenting voting records, insults about experience and qualification, sly suggestions to racist voting blocks - these came to characterize the Clinton campaign, much as they characterize many Republican campaigns. At no point did the Clinton campaign diverge from their personal attacks on Obama - indeed, they attempted to "swift boat" him themselves with the Reverend Wright issue, one which Joan Walsh played to symphonic volumes. If it's good enough for Salon, why isn't it good enough for Little Green Footballs, hm?
This election has demonstrated that when it comes to "win at any cost" thinking and acting, Democrats are an even match for any Republican. Now if only they could stop their characteristic suicidal in-fighting and turn that bloodlust toward McCain, rather than undermining themselves as they historically do at such times.
All praise to the irresponsible white girl who can't use a condom on a one-night stand. (Any parents out there wishing to promote this woman as a role model? Step up and be heard!)
Young black woman make this "choice" every day. Yet white-owned media like Salon do not praise the choice. At best, it is held up as an example of "oppression" or "lack of opportunity." At worst, the women are vilified as "welfare queens" by conservatives and babied into self-helplessness by liberals.
It's also suggestive of the race-blindness which appears to affect white feminists these days. (Heck, that's historically been part of American feminism, right? Ignoring poor black women?) In their insistence that "sexism" lies at the core of Clinton's defeat, while denying that "racism" was any factor in her favor, many American feminists have demonstrated not only racial insensitivity but even intolerance.
So let's all cheer this over-privileged white kid who did not care to use a condom (even if only to prevent STD transmission while having sex with a total stranger), did not choose to use any other form of birth control, did not choose to terminate the pregnancy, and who now complains that her choice cost her some of her privilege.
Koppelman's point is essnetially this: fuck the law. Who cares about illegality? Kucinich is a popularly-elected, veteran Congressman who deserves no respect from anyone because the media has deemed him a "laughingstock." Thus sayeth the ever-wise and ever-informed Alex Koppelman.
No wonder Koppelman likes Clinton. His respect and regard for the rule of law, like hers, are secondary to his own selfish, jaded, and cynical opinions. All that matters to Koppelman (and other pseudo-journalists of his ilk) are appearances. He lacks even the most basic ability (or perhaps it is desire) to analyze anything beyond the basic, overly simplified sound-bite-like nuggets offered from his personal wisdom.
Koppelman lacks the knowledge of many letter-writers, and his prose skills are rudimentary at best. His only true gift is snark, which he of course applies with a broad brush (except for when it comes to his favored politicians, of course). He is, in fact, perhaps the perfect example of the sort of bias and ignorance which have come to inform Salon under the editorial "guidance" of Joan Walsh: he appears to be a serious journalist, but in reality, just beneath the micro-thin layer of professionalism he wears like a hair-shirt, he is little more than an officious and superficial know-nothing with the temperament of a spoiled child, refusing to consider anyting unpleasant to his tired, narrow, world view. What a great journalist and fine citizen he makes.
An Asian-American woman propelled to her position by privilege rather than hard work, she's corrupted by a form of vile-self-hatred which projects itself onto other minorities. She was raised to believe that hard, honest work leads to success; her parents are exemplars of this, in fact. But Michelle was spoiled growing up, given a healthy belief in her own intelligence and abilities, but not a healthy respect for others. While she attempted to become a journalist, her drive for perfection and her inability to accept her own limitations led to her being viewed as both arrogant and incompetent by most of her professional colleagues. (She was one of those junior-reporters who thought she was smarter than the editor, and could do a better job.) Additionally, like many successful minorities, she is riddled with a contempt for those who share her race (and gender) but not her level of success. She despises such people are "lazy" and "ignorant."
She married her way onto the neocon ladder of success, leveraging her husband's position and contacts to gain her own position. The far-right of the neocon group needed a female spokesperson, and Anne Coulter was too busy doing TV. Her blog was pushed and promoted by the usual suspects of the GOP Press Echo Chamber; it is to this date relatively thin and without much in-depth analysis, and is not respected as an outlet for anything other than Michelle's tragically deluded rantings. (I say tragic because, in spite of appearances suggested by the blog, Michelle is one smart woman.)
