  • I, for one...

[Read the article: "V for Vendetta"]

...truly appreciate Ms. Zacharek's reviews. Nor do I have to agree with them (on occasion, vehemently) to respect her as a both reviewer and a person. To the "movie buff" who says, "I hate to say this, but honestly, Stephanie, you suck", "Your opinions are worthless" and "No offense, but this is really sincere"-- prefacing your nasty comments with "no offense" and "I hate to say this" is a jerkass move worthy of any number of brainless right-wing pundits. Oh, and hiding your identity under a pseudonym? That's just cowardice, plain and simple. It's too easy to snipe from the bushes.

  • Ethics Shmetics

[Read the article: What hath Domenech done?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

And right-wing nutjobs say liberals have no ethics. Maybe he just got tired of paying big bucks to have someone else write his essays in college and decided Googling was cheaper.

    What a jerkwad.

  • No Hate

[Read the article: Men we love]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't believe Broadsheet hates men. I always thought one of the defining reasons for Broadsheet's existence was that they rightfully love and celebrate women, come to their defense, point out inequities and take both women and men to task when necessary. So let's not hear any more griping about men being bashed just because of a perceived bias. Don't we get enough of that from the far-right wingnuts?

Now, Rebecca Traister, on the other hand...

  • what about HH?

Was Heather Havrilesky fired or did she quit? Just curious.

  • Legally Wed Heather

[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

She'll be legally divorced in six months.

  • Defending Mr Shapiro

[Read the article: Lamont: "This is not Fox News, Sir"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Lieberman may be a pain in the collective tuchis of progressives everywhere, myself included, but Mr Shapiro is correct in calling the Senator a centrist. I'll take Lieberman, nasty warts and all, over a far-right wingnut anytime. Even a bad angel is preferable to a good devil.

  • plain janes aren't plain at all

[Read the article: "The Oh in Ohio"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I agree with the letter written by "miriald"-- I'm a fella who would also love to see the "ugly duckling" gender roles switched. I've become numbe to the constant stereotype of the "ugly, dumb-as-a-stump fat guy" hooking up with the "smart, sassy, smokingly-hot woman". Hollywood's definition of a Plain Jane is someone who's a size 4. Give me a woman prefers 'The Nation' over 'Cosmo' and prefers DOS over gloss. Looks fade; brains and heart are made of much sturdier material.

  • Blockhead!

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Finally, the one word that perfectly sums up this self-obsessed dope. "Blockhead"... yep, that's the essence of T.O. to a "T". Oh, and as an aside: once again King has proven that not only does terrific sports commentary exist outside ESPN's Page 2, but often surpasses it.

Heh. "Blockhead". I'm gonna chuckle for days over that.

  • Jodi Applegate, schoolmarm

[Read the article: Fox 5: Punk'd!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

And they say Fox doesn't hire calm, reasonable reporters and commentators. Jodi Applegate: moralist, blondanista, fussy schoolmarm.

  • Critical Responses

I, for one, will be keeping a very interested eye on what others have to say about this book. For every positive review I come across, I will wonder deeply about the type of personality that would consider Toby Young to be read-worthy. I read exactly one chapter of Young's first book and knew I needn't go any further. I just figured my hopelessly middlebrow sensibility didn't get it. But after reading Havrilesky's evisceration, I'm thinking, maybe I wasn't wrong...

  • Olbermann's take

[Read the article: "The Night Listener"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

On today's edition of ESPN Radio's "The Big Show", Keith Olbermann said he himself had a real life run-in with "The Night Listener". I'm curious as to whether this is just apocryphal urban legend on his part, or the real deal. He's supposed to elaborate tonight on MSNBC. Personally, I have my doubts but what the hey.

  • In a sense, they have grown up

    [Read the article: Quarterlife crisis]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Boys and girls, MTV has been a corporate entity since Day One. Shows like "Headbangers' Ball" and the late, lamented "120 Minutes" (where have you gone, Dave Kendall?) weren't ways to express crative freedom - they were marketing ploys, out to mine new acolytes wherever and however. Whether the difference was between buying a Rod Stewart cassette (remember those?) or Midnight Oil, it made no difference to the suits... as long as well all consumed. And we did. By the millions.

MTV hasn't changed their strategy one bit - only the methods by which they execute them. True, those methods seem much more reprehensible than they were in our day. But in that sense, MTV's always been the grown-up. It's *us* who were once the kids, happily following their Pied Piper tune. Now it's simply our kids' turn.

  • As a Tennessean...

[Read the article: That's one angry judge]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...I'm cringing, as once again my home state has succeeded in failing. Failing to have a clue. Failing to have a conscience. The state that betrayed Al Gore, and susequently the country, rears its ugly head and looks at itself with sadisatisfaction. I urge other posters here to Google local small papers in and around Clarksville and see how local residents are applauding the Hanging Judge's actions.

I'm a blue mind in a red state. And these days I'm wondering if I should continue to stay and fight the good fight or move elsewhere. I am sick to my stomach right now.

That should have read as "sadistic satisfaction". There, I succeeded in proving I'm no smarter than any other Tennessean.

  • a crackling good writer, by golly

[Read the article: What's so damn great about aging?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

For years, Ephron's two cinematic themes have been thus: It's okay to leave a good man as long as you think there's a better one out there ("Sleepless in Seattle", "You've Got Mail") and people who live anywhere else but New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles are simplistic cultural neanderthals ("My Blue Heaven", "Lucky Numbers").

Come to think of it, no wonder Little Ms. Becca thinks she's a crackling good writer.
