  • how provincial of me

[Read the article: I want more commitment from my married girlfriend]

I could say something about how he shouldn't be with a married woman in the first place, but that betrays how small-minded and provincial I am. Please, continue the affair. One simply must be modern about these things.

  • @ Joshua

Yeah, I noticed that particular comment went ::poof:: as well. Quelle surprise! It was a crappy comment, to be sure, but let us keep in mind the letters page ain't a democracy. Remember the Salonista credo: "If your letter offends me, pluck it out."

Oh god my sides hurt! The mindset of Paul Wolfowitz summed up in nine panels. Just brilliant!

Tracy, were you taking on the hypocrisy of advertisers in general or Mr. Dangin in particular? Because your video sure makes it sound like you were taking on the latter.

Transcribing your spot, with emphasis (mine) added:

"...unsurprisingly, (Dangin) said, 'It was a challenge to keep everyone's skin and faces showing the mileage but not looking unattractive.'

"It's a good reminder that in advertising even allegedly 'lumpy', 'real' and 'true' beauty is highly Photoshopped."

That's why I prefer reading these pieces, rather than watching them. When you arch an eyebrow and put special inflection on words like "unsurprisingly" and "allegedly", I don't have to interpret exactly how much snark you're applying -- and that's part of the fun. If I'd never read the New Yorker's excellent piece on Dangin and relied solely on the short you provided, I'd have considered him to be just another a Madison Avenue sexist who deserved the smackdown.

It's nice that you added the update, though. That way it comes out less like character assassination and more like taking Dangin's character out behind an alley, beating the crap out of it and then two days later apologizing for the mix-up. Oops!

Mr. Dangin deserves better treatment. The advertising industry? Not so much.

...let's bring back the Proctor and Gamble logo -- after all, these are the same kinds of wingnuts who thought that was satanic.

    Morons.

"People very rarely feel inclined to vote for a party whose membership calls them stupid, racist, etc. Maybe you're right. We may well be. But do you want to be right, do you want to feel superior, or do you want to win? Drop the condescenion. Show some civility." -Little Blue Dot

The majority of letter writers have spoken, and I'm obviously on the losing side of this debate. I live in the reddest part of Tennessee -- home of Nascar Dads and Security Moms, where Dubya stickers are still proudly displayed on pickup trucks and SUV's alike. The Democratic Party didn't abandon these people. They left us because the Republicans spoon fed them hatred and fear to their heart's content.

So, refresh my memory. We're supposed to be better than the GOP, right? We're supposed to keep pushing and prodding this country to do the right thing when voices of intolerance keep trying to shout us down. Turns out, however, holding ourselves to a higher standard is tantamount to touting moral superiority - and we Democrats aren't supposed to do that.

What's a liberal to do? Supporting the working class while ignoring (thus tacitly endorsing) their racism, sexism, xenophobia and homophobia is a game we shouldn't have to play anymore. I don't see any need to be civil to uncivil attitudes. I refuse to be tolerant of intolerance. How appropriate the issue of appeasement's been bandied about lately, because that's what it feels like to me.

"But do you want to be right, do you want to feel superior, or do you want to win?"

Just can't do it. Sorry Joanie, sorry Dee, sorry Salonistas. Hate me, yell at me, tell me "I don't get it". Whatever. I know what's right, and legitimizing backwards attitudes in the name of party unity isn't it. I want to be right AND I want to win; why is there a constant assumption we can't do both?

I know what we're fighting for. Maybe it's time we all remembered what we're fighting against.

If Rebecca Traister and I were to compare a laundry list of our political stances, I would most likely agree with her ninety-five times out of a hundred. She's easily one of Salon's smartest, brightest writers.

But she's one of the most infuriating ones as well; her insistence on dealing with piddly, ticky-tack nonsense that means zilch in the grand scheme of things makes me throw my hands in the air at least twice a week. (Yes, it's also what keeps me eagerly coming back to her. I'd rather not ask why.)

Let it GO, Rebecca. Wait til you have footage of Obama clubbing baby seals while smoking a carton of Marlboros before you hang him out to dry. Jeeeeez.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Don't know if it's in the archives, but my suggestion is to go on eBay and try to find a dog-eared copy of "Now, Endsville". The odd copy is out there if you're lucky.

If you've never read the entire serial, stick around. This is one of Carol's best stories.

  • UGGH

[Read more letters about this article: Here]

That's easily one of the most disturbing, squirm-inducing photos I've seen in a while. Up to this point the entire story's been on the periphery of my radar, shoved aside by the Hillary/Obama Deathmatch. Now I'll be following the fates of Warren Jeffs and his brethren much more closely.
