Lewis article
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I thought this was fantastic and forwarded it to everyone at my university (which has been trying desperately to build a football program). Particularly powerful was the disturbing racial imagery of (mostly) wealthy/comfortable white fans cheering on (mostly) poor black athletes and how we continue to ignore that and claim it's all about education. Anyone who has taught "student-athletes" at a BCS school knows which part of that description takes precedence. I also completely agree that the NFL has a huge financial interest in the college game and (if forced) would manage to work out a deal that is more fair than the current hypocritical system. I love college football (go gators!) but the exploitation of its core members is shameful.

Sean Taylor
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This is off topic, but Sean Taylor just died from gunshot wounds. A beautiful player and only 24 years old. Tragic.

Please.
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Before this devolves into a love him-hate him over Sean Taylor, can we just back off and mark the death of a very talented player? I did not bring it up initially to criticize King (especially since he died *after* his column was posted) but rather as a point of information. It is somehow unseemly to use it for any other purpose. We still don't know how/why/whatever the details are and I won't comment on them or Taylor's personality in general. But this was a human being, with a HUGE fan base here in DC, who gave many people a great deal of pleasure to watch on the field, and that is enough for me to honor his passing.

Shame on you

[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm disgusted by these letters. Way to go "Anonymous." Aren't you brave. At least Wes is honest about who he is.

Message Boards
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I don't listen to sports radio but I do read college football message boards and it seems similar. I often feel that I am getting to see men in their natural habitat in a way I never have before. Tons of sports talk and bashing of rivals (good-natured and not), but also often incredible sexism (the tag pictures many have are not to be believed) and anger. The anonynimity of the site adds to the no holds barred attitude. I'm not sure how much intelligent discourse goes on (40 threads all devoted to screaming TIM TEBOW OVERRATED!! gets old) but I think that says more about college football fans than sports in general.

Davy Jones is so dreamy!
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Who can forget the Brady Bunch episode with Marcia's crush on him? Sigh. Then again, Madonna pissing off Pepsi with her "Like a Prayer" video was one of the highlights of the '80s.
And I always love the shout-out to Andrew's March Madness piece. High point in literature indeed! (Yeah, yeah, he's my brother.)

Fate
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In what can only be attributed to a perfect alignment of the stars, my university breaks for Easter starting late this week, freeing up all day Thursday and Friday for March Madness viewing. Maybe God really is on our side? Go Hoyas!

Now I'm worried
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have almost the exact same picks (except of course that Kansas over Georgetown -- for shame!) which can't be a good thing.
I also find myself ridiculously rooting for Bruce Pearl ever since Tennessee played the Gators in Gainesville and he explained that he was "a Jewish basketball coach in the Southeastern Conference, where people greet you with 'Shalom, y'all.'" That man has a sense of humor.
Oh, and Crumley, it's Andrew Leonard, not Sullivan. Very different entities.

Lynn White
[Read the article: A bad week for buffalo mozzarella ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]One of my favorite books in grad school was White's _Medieval Technology and Social Change_ which argues the stirrup caused feudalism (ok, slightly exaggerated summary). Although I didn't agree with it all, White had a wonderful way of connecting technology, the environment, and religion. If you don't know it Andrew, you might find interesting his article in Science "The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic Crisis," which blames the Middle Ages for the state we're in today (or in the 1960s when the piece was published).

European Reading Room
[Read the article: Darwin and the Ming Dynasty: Online like never before]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]While I appreciate the LC's attempts to move the European Reading Room, Matt Raymond's remarks are a bit misleading. The new room is not ready for use (even though the old reading room is about to close) nor does it have nearly the same amount of space (especially for permanent reference shelves). Any researcher knows the value of easy access to the appropriate reference material and it is just not the same to have to call them up each time. It is clear that the library is putting revenue over scholarly use with no regards for the many national and international researchers who use the facilities every year. As an academic and European historian I can assure you that the "relocation" of the European Reading Room is cause for concern for all of my colleagues and we have been writing, gathering, and protesting what we view as a complete travesty.

Memories
[Read the article: The indie-rock fall and rise of R.E.M.]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I saw REM for the first time on my 18th birthday during spring break in Jacksonville. They were playing free on the beach (and Stipe had his big red afro, so you know this was a while ago) and there were maybe 50-100 people standing on plastic chairs loving every minute. Just down the beach thousands were jammed into a hotel plaza trying to see the real "big" band of Spring Break, The Fixx. I still tease my friend that she chose that show over REM, since REM was that odd band that sang weird lyrics and all the cool kids would be watching The Fixx. Don't tell me REM wasn't alternative.
