  • Start local

[Read the article: How can I get a writing job?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Look at the local papers. They can probably use stringers to cover the boring stuff like zoning boards. I used to do that, years back. Pretty dull, but it got me a by-line and some basic credibility that someone would publish something I wrote. I did it while working full time at an unrelated job, and the pay was crap, but it gave me some clips. I was always surprised that they made an impression on people, because I had no real experience when I was doing it, and it was not a prestigious paper, just a local weekly.

So find your local weeklies, freebies, etc. and see if you can start something there on nights and weekends while you continue to work and look for that big break.

For other types of writing jobs, consulting firms and think tanks need writers. It's not journalism, but it is closer. Just a thought.

  • No GWB?

Where was the president during these discussions? Trying on his flight suit? Clearing brush? Making videos with Barney?

  • Sorry

If you are this paralyzed before the kid is even conceived, you'll end up catatonic over something like choosing a school.

I hear an enormous amount of fear. Let it go. Parents just do their best. We're none of us perfect. Besides, it's not that complicated. You'll figure it out as you go. Love them, respect them, teach them some values, require some chores, and enjoy who they turn out to be. That takes care of most of it.

  • Obama called them on it

[Read the article: Will Obama's debate stumble hurt him?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I am a Hillary supporter, but as far as I can tell all Obama did was to call those guys on their crappy questions, a la John Stewart and CNN. They could have asked about any number of pressing issues, but instead they are worried about lapel pins. Moronic.

I think those stupid questions can hurt him because he needs to continue to demonstrate to those of us who have not drunk the Obama Kool Aid that he is about more than "hope" and "yes we can." Bush also promised to unite us and bring change and blah, blah, blah, and we see where that got us. (OK, he did bring change.)

I think Obama will be our nominee, and I'll vote for him, but unless we can get beyond pins, preachers and rally slogans, it will be with my fingers crossed that he can live up to the hype.

  • two thoughts

    1. 24 is still young, you have time to get it figured out.

    2. A person who wants to move away and live a quiet life with little contact with the outside world is probably not cut out for any type of sales job.

  • Great week

[Read the article: Attention, pundits. It ain't over]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In the last few weeks I got to see Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and Stephen Colbert in person. I tried to get to an Obama event but couldn't make it to the ones in my area, so I guess I'll have to catch him in the general election. Great time to be a Pennsylvanian.

Traister did represent the spirit of the Clinton crowds well. And yes, our gov Ed Rendell came out and worked the lines, shaking hands, taking a million pictures and doing the Eagles chant (he does a local postgame show here on Sundays during football season). Got a picture of him with my kids.

I'm rooting hard for Hillary and I'll vote for Obama in November. Hillary can be proud that she will have helped pave the way for the woman who eventually wins. It's been great to see the process up close, and to show the kids what it's about, and to take them to some events so they can see these are real people, not just TV figures.

Plus, to get to see Colbert in Philadelphia! Nation, does it get any better than that?

  • @MaddieP

[Read the article: Happy voting in Pennsylvania]

I did not take that man to mean that he is a Republican and that is why he is voting for Hillary. To me it seemed like he did not want to say that he is a racist and would not vote for a black man. I hope your explanation is the correct one.

  • Settle this race once and for all

[Read the article: Looking past Pennsylvania]

Give the nomination to Joe Biden.

Olbermann, who I enjoy watching usually, has become a parody of the SNL parody: "Which of these top stories... Hillary Clinton the mean b* hurts Obama's feelings. The Clinton campaign dares to say something less than worshipful about Obama. Clintonites are ruining the world by supporting that out of control woman. Tonight in worst persons, Hillary Clinton. And a special comment - "Who does that b* think she is, and why is she so mean to Barack? Can't she see he is the second coming?'"

  • Enough

Hasn't this woman received too much attention already?
