Glenn,
Of course it's behavior that Craig chose. I admit that in my post. But, in today's blog I hear you commenting more on the GOP's handling of the Craig scandal and less on Craig's actions per se. And I argue that the family values trumpeters are acting out of a sort of denial that is the same as what any closeted, in denial gay acts from. And that is the pervasive, underlying "mental illness" of the entire far right wing.
I wasn't diminishing Craig's responsibility, only asking for apples to be compared to apples and for more light to be shone on the cognitive dissonance that infects the family values wing.
Thanks
Yes, I know that the Roy Cohn of Angels In America is fiction. That's why I mentioned that the monologue is from the play. Keep it real? That bizarre CIA story is a hoot: Hillary Clinton an Illuminati witch--that's priceless. Maybe not as priceless as imagining Gerald Ford in the White House screening room watching child porn.
King,
You mentioned:
"The folks who tune in ... because they're interested in the up-close-and-personal sideline stories about the players and their moms, they're not going to get much out of Jaworski."
Can anyone out there tell me if they personally know ANYONE who watches for the sideline drivel the networks force-feed us? Seriously, I cannot even fathom that a person would sit through 3+ hours of a sport they don't care for just for the 8 or 9 minutes of info-tainment.
King, I assume you were being sarcastic, but you usually break the 4th wall when you're doing that. What gives?
Beyond that, I'm bummed I missed the early game now. I'll catch Jaworski next week.
PS I have to wonder if you'd be such the Jaworski-ophile if the Eagles had knocked off the Raiders back in the day! ;-)
Hey King,
I get your point about the 4th and 1 trend in the NFL, and I largely agree. But I don't quite agree with your use of the Seattle-Arizona game as the model. You negated your point by referring to the first 4th and 1 the Seahawks faced. They WENT FOR IT. And they got a touchdown. I think Holmgren thought his defense was more than capable of shutting down the Cards as they had all 2nd half. It was tied relatively late in the 4th quarter and the 'Hawks had trailed all freakin' day long. They had to take the points and the lead. They lost the game thanks to a Hasselback/Alexander miscue that was so bush-league it's barely believable. Seattle is batting .500 on 4th and 1; not exactly "never" going for it. Had they won the game you'd have said nothing on the topic.
That said, I loved your bit on the Steelers retro look. I like it too. Are there any plans for a Salon.com throwback week? I clicked the Browns/Ravens link and got a warm, fuzzy rush of nostalgia at seeing the old red and gold Salon layout of yore. Why don't you pitch it to Joan and see what she says?
