This whole idea that women were held down is laughable.
[Read the article: ABC's of gender]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]you can always point out the adversity faced by anyone regardless of gender.
Marie Curie succeeded. Mary Shelly succeeded. I could name more women in history if I could think of them.
Women may be just as capable in their own way, but face it, only men are driven, then driven some more, to excel and to produce and to become heroes and demigods and come out on TOP despite the odds so that they can get more poon. Do women need to succeed to get laid? Of course not.
Look at modern rock- a gender neutral territory if ever these was one. What holds women back TODAY?
1. Many women equate loud brutish obnoxiousness with being a successful musician (Pink, Peaches) The simple answer is NO. So this is a conceptual anomaly on the part of women- they cannot conceive of an appealing position to take in the market. Was Jimmy Hendrix a loud obnoxious brute?
2. When women get together to form bands, with a few exceptions they usually piss around in a girly ghetto of 'weak little ol me' attitude. Think Go Gos, all cute high voices. Nobody cares about this stuff, it is the equivalent of female sports- only lesbians care and there are not so many of them yet to be the biggest market. So this is a fault of bad marketing assessment- who is the market you are targeting?
3. When most women write songs, they piss and moan and talk about how much men done this and done that to them. WHO WANTS TO HEAR THIS CRAP?!? Did Robert Plant sing all his songs about how women suck? Does Bono whimper about his constant mistreatment because he is Irish? Write stuff people want to hear. Women produce stuff to WHINE (terminal self indulgence), men produce stuff to SUCCEED. BIG DIFFERENCE.
4. Women are not as driven to succeed. Think of all the pretty girls who are told by the record companies how to market themselves and what to do to be sexy. Most women do not bother to think thru the market expectations and what people might like. One exception which proves this rule is Madonna- SHE defines herself, nobody else does (of course she is a world class marketer, so she knows how to figure out what 'sells'). Stevie Nicks is another perfect example of being self driven.
5. Most women are too lazy to forge their own way in terms of the business. The two exceptions I can think of, Ani DiFranco and Nanci Griffith, found their success because they did not understand the word 'no' and did an end run around the industry. Now the music industry eats out of their hands.
6. Many women get sideswiped by other demands or desires, like wanting to be a mom or marrying some successful dude.
7. Many women are fixated on the notion that deep down, they are less than men. So naturally they think success is a men's game. They defeat themselves before they begin.
8. More and more women are taught to resent men merely because of the success of men in the world. This makes for a convenient excuse for women to lay blame for their failure at the feet of men.
9. Women care too much about other people's opinions. Everyone gets criticized. I am sure Shakespeare or Mark Twain were both told by many editors that their work was crap and not publishable. Women get discouraged too easily and turn heel.
10. Women do not think outside the box enough. They do not put a new twist on old ideas to make them fresh. the few exceptions again prove the rule. Prince has been a genius at putting his own twist on some combination of Sly Stone, Jimi, JAmes Brown and many other influences. Other than pretty much Bjork, there is NOTHING out there that females are producing that equals the novelty, creativity, and sheer genius of Radiohead.
11. Women ignore technical demands. Think of how few women go into computer science. well, excuse me but how the FUCK are women supposed to succeed and produce the next trillion dollar industrial revolution if they do not bother to even pursue the science behind it?!? [and some more exclamations] ?!?!?
!!?
Notice none of these reasons I mention above are because of some so called great Mythical Patriarchal Beast swooping down out of the sky to thwart women from being successful musicians.
If women have historically had a few more adversities than did men, it is only because men did not trust women and thought of women as selfish and immature. You can understand this QUITE EASILY when everyday you see men posting their testimony-opinions-comments on Broadsheet and every day women disregard the men's comments as mere troll behavior- AS IF MEN DO NOT MATTER. So you can understand why men enjoy it when women fail as a result. Would you want the men to succeed if you were practically SPAT ON by men for merely stating an opinion? No, you would rightfully be resentful.

Some woman
[Read the article: She may not have gravitas ...]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]was making a two minute prerecorded commentary on the radio this morning. I do not even remember what the topic was, but it was something about Washington.
The woman sounded chirpy and cute and somehow 'dull', as if she did not quite understand what she was telling people.
Lo, I find out this two minute bit was spoken by Katey Couric.
When not faced with her phony plastic million candlepower smile and merely listening to her voice, it was then that I understood why she is IRRELEVANT.
She has no gravitas.
I am shocked such dunderheads work at the network that hired her. Did they not ever listen to her voice prior to putting her in that $11 million a year position? Really, it is ultimate proof that corporate politics has triumphed over common sense. The weenie who placed her in that slot is probably some privileged Philips Exeter-Yale-Wharton kid who got his job because daddy knew someone. Anyway, the market is punishing her network for their not so minor blunder.
