  • If rules are rules

[Read the article: Clinton writes to Obama]

Why are the New Hampshire delegates being seated and allowed to vote? They cheated too by setting their primary at a date before those prescribed by the DNC rules.

And it doesn't violate party rules to have a re-vote.

Obama: Together we can(not solve the first problem I'm faced with where I could actually do something positive).

Accurate, but too long to be an effective bumper sticker.

  • New Hampshire cheated too

Under the rules set down by the DNC, New Hampshire couldn't have its primary any earlier than January 14th. See http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/19/opinion/19levin.html?ref=opinion

New Hampshire held its primary on January 8th.

So the 4 state pledge, or pre-Super Tuesday has nothing to do with it.

So if rules are rules, why are the New Hampshire delegates allowed to vote.

  • Except in the Democratic party, Florida voters don't count

[Read the article: McCain and the Latino vote]

Just after posting this, I noticed a report that -- for the first time ever -- that in Florida, there are now more Latinos who are registered Democrats than there are Latinos who are registered Republicans. Assuming that's part of the broader trend in the community and not just a reflection of the general shift to Democrats this year, that's really, really bad news for the Republican Party.

How is this an advantage if their votes don't count?

What are you talking about? Do you really think that because their state party broke the rules and got punished that somehow their votes won't count this november?

    -- Hepstyle

Please get your facts straight. The date of the Democratic primary in Florida wasn't set by the Florida Democratic party, it was set by the Republican controlled legislature and the Republican Governor.

Then, based on what the Florida GOP did, the DNC decided to extend the middle finger to the entire state of Florida.

Obviously, people in Florida will still be able to vote in November, but

    • Fuck You isn't much of a vote getter as a campaign slogan
    • If -- perhaps I should I say when -- there is any funny business in Florida involving miscounts or voter suppression, the Democratic party has zero moral authority to complain about it.

This is also part of what so many people find irritating about Barack Obama (I know it may not look like it, but I'm not trying to be snide by essentially copying your line word-for-word).

Obama tells us he's looking for a new kind of inclusive politics that transcends race, class, party, etc. Yet he behaves exactly as Hillary Clinton does. He's willing to write off Florida and Michigan because it's to his, short-term, political advantage. Thanks, but I prefer cynical politics straight, no chaser. Moreover, when choosing between two cyncial political maneuvers, I choose the one that counts the most votes, not thet the least.

Obama contends that he should be elected President because he's capable of bringing people together to solve difficult issues. This is the first time, on the national stage, where he's had an opportunity to make good his claim. So far, he hasn't done anything to justify it because he hasn't done anything.

  • Look it up

Both houses of the Florida Legislature had (and still have) Republican majorities. It was the FL legislature, not the Florida Democratic party, that passed the bill setting the primary date. Then, the Governor of Florida (Crist - R) signed it into law. It is simply inccurate to say, as you did, that the Florida Democratic party broke the rules.

Moreover, I didn't say it was a Repulican tactic. But it does mean that the DNC is disenfranching Florida Democrats for something done by the Republican party. It makes no sense.

And this is Florida, not some small population state. Not only is a caucus not particularly feasible in one of the largest states in the country that, so far as I know, has never had a state-wide caucus, it's anti-democratic because if you're sick, working, or otherwise unable to attend 1-2 hours for the caucus to take place, you don't get to vote.

    Why

did Hillary sign an agreement before the primaries along with all other candidates that the FL and MI delegations will not be seated and their votes will not count because they broke the rules? How can she claim now with a straight face that Obama is trying to keep the FL and MI votes from counting? This is so outrageous, she needs to be expelled from the party.

    -- pantanal

Please get your facts straight. The only agreement Hillary made was the 4-state pledge. The 4-state pledge never said that the delegates from Michigan or Florida would not be seated, or if seated, that they those delegates votes would not be counted.

The terms of that pledge were that none of the Democratic candidates would campaign in any state except Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada or South Carolina before February 5th. Under the terms of the pledge, fund raising was not considered campaiging, so candidates were allowed to visit Florida to raise money.

Unfortunately one of the candidates broke the pledge by running TV ads. His name was Barack Obama. His campaign claimed they were making a national ad buy and were unable to exclude Florida from that ad buy. Rather remarkable claim since it's common to buy ads on cable tv or the networks that only play in specific areas.

Of course, if rules are rules, why are the New Hampshire delegates being seated, and why are their votes counted? Under the DNC rules, the earliest New Hampshire could could hold a primary was January 14th, See http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/19/opinion/19levin.html?ref=opinion. New Hampshire held its primrary on January 8th.

By the way, will Comrade Obama expel Clinton from the party before or after the show trial?
