We knew a couple who had a similar issue -- she smoked and he couldn't stand it. Unlike the LW's situation, she had smoked since before they began dating, and her boyfriend didn't stop at the disapproving looks. He threatened to leave her if she didn't quit. They fought about this issue incessantly.
My fiance and I would often discuss our friends' situation. My fiance had never smoked, but I had been a very regular smoker for 10+ years. Despite this, we both agreed that quitting is a personal choice, and no one can threaten someone into quitting cigarettes. My fiance despised my smoking also (said he refused to date smokers before he met me) but kept generally quiet about it. He moved into my apartment, in which I smoked, and had ear infections the whole first winter as a result. I discontinued smoking in the apartment and was guilt-ridden when the the next winter came and went without him getting a single ear infection.
A few years passed by, we bought a house, and I was banished to the porch or outside for my smoke breaks. My fiance's freedom from tobacco addiction was so attractive to me, and something I loved and respected so much about him. I wished I'd never started smoking, and this wish grew into full-blown loathing of my habit. It was this disgust with my dependent, jittery self contrasted with the relative serenity of my man that finally drove me to quit successfully after two previous failed attempts. It's been over a year now, and I truly love being a non-smoker. I will always be grateful to him for being a good example for me without being nasty about it. That took a lot of patience on his part, and several antibiotic prescriptions as well.
LW, you should quit now before you really regret it. Your boyfriend is looking at you that way because he loves you, knows you are prone to addiction, and doesn't want to see you sick or dead at a too-early age. He's not threatening to leave you, screaming at you, or initiating fights about it. Obviously he knows he can't make you do anything, just like he couldn't make you stop the bad habits you had before. You did that all on your own, with him as your inspiration.
By the way, our friends eventually broke up, although her habit was only part of the reason. She's still smoking.
...irregardless
I loved it.
