What about other licenses?

I'm sure the state grants other licenses that are based on long tradition. Perhaps we can prevent gays from driving? fishing? Do they still give out dog licenses? If they do, that a damn long tradition so maybe homo's should have dogs! (if we outlaw homo's having dogs, only outlaws... er... will be gay dog-owners?) Or at least they should be restricted to a specific class of dog license that restricts them to owning poodles and other toy dogs.

(I shouldn't HAVE to say it, but I was joking)

Original article: Condi Rice on Obama

Getting tired

Of people on the right putting Obama's win in the context of race. Its makes it sound like he's an affirmative action hire. Its dismisses his accomplishments while also ducking the true failures of conservatism, the right, and McCain's campaign.

If Condi can't say the best man won, she should shut up and get back to enabling bush.

The key point.

That she didn't know stuff isn't that bad. Yes these are basic things people should know but I can let that slide. To me the telling issue is that she refused to prepare. In other words, not only did she not know things, she refused to correct it. She thought she could just sit in front of Katie, do her cute adorable 'hey don't everyone like me' routine and she'd be ok.

No THAT is scary.

Original article: Winners and losers

Hillary is a loser.

Not only did she actually lose her contest, but the contest she ran cost her dignity and respect because of her rove-like campaign tactics and most sadly her open reliance on people who would never vote for a black person as a strategy to win.

Oh please

Please let the base cling to the past. They'll bring down the RNC next election cycle too, forcing their candidates to walk(erect) a fine line between centrist positions and the dark-ages.

Original article: GOP prospects for 2012

Primary v. General = Bad for RNC

As long as the social conservative base forces the RNC candidates to act like hate-filled religious zealots during the primaries I think the Dems will be fine in 2012, barring Obama having a bad presidency. Considering the country and global situation left for him and us by Bush, that is not inconceivable, unfortunately.

With the internet, youtube, blogs, 24hr news-cycle, etc... the RNC can't really appeal to their base without the rest of the country hearing about it and going, "Eeew!" Even if the winner of the RNC primaries doesn't espouse the nonsense, the center is still alienated by all the ugliness spouted by the rest of the pack.

It's lose/lose for the RNC: appeal to the base = alienate the center, appeal to the center = alienate the base. The RNC is going to be screwed until they figure out either how to appeal to their base secretly or a far smarter idea, get a new base. I think its time as a country we put these social issues behind us as things we'd like the govt to decide for us. If the RNC took a progressive but fiscally conservative approach they'd be a hell of a lot more competitive.

Its a tough call

Lets face it, Obama's historic presidency won't be something to cheer if he governs with the same dismissive attitude towards congress (and the law) as Bush did. On the other hand, if you were potentially a 'great' president, would you want to have to rely on congress to help you get things done? Our congress is so spineless, that if they suddenly got a spine all they'd do is form a sub-committee to argue about what it is, and probably accuse it of not loving America enough.

Also, amid all the arguing (ok, mostly baseless accusations) about whether Obama should govern from the imagined center-right or the progressive left, whats left out is that it's pretty clear to me that Obama was elected to fix Bush's mess. How can he do that without ramming through what needs to be done?

So I figure there is one hope: Obama is a good enough person that he can use Bush's methods for fixing what is broken then before then end of his term make all of those methods illegal.

@ NotOrbitBoy

1. Fraudulent/mistaken/accidental registrations do not equal votes. Got that? Being registered doesn't equal voting.

2. Most of the cases you cited were unintended consequences that were a result of mistakes on the states end, not nefarious planning on the hypothetical fraudulent voters end.

3. Granted that there are problems in the system that allow non-valid voters from voting, I would rather have that than the solutions proposed by the Right that would by a far greater degree DENY valid voters from voting, who happen to vote democratic in a larger % than republican, as they would be purged from the rolls. Got that? To stop fraudulent registrations that don't automatically equate fraudulent votes you would need to actually deny legitimate voters from voting. That's the real deal here.

No system is perfect, there will always be problems, question is, which problem do you prefer to live with: Denying valid American citizens the right to vote, or letting non-citizens register? Bear in mind NO fraudulent votes, cast specifically in an attempt to subvert the outcome of an election has been found.

On kids in restaurants

The problem I've noticed is that parents take their kids with them to restaurants then ignore them completely while they talk to other adults. They way I see it, if you didn't want to have dinner with your kids, don't bring them to the restaurant with you. Think about it. Would you take anyone else to a restaurant then expect them to sit their silently while you chat with someone else? Its obviously rude and disrespectful to other diners if your child acts out but its also rude and disrespectful to your child to expect them to behave as if they were an accessory to your life.
