Lets lose the "developing" meme for China
[Read the article: No more plastic bags, no more jobs]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
I'm sick and tired of China being excused at every turn as a developing nation...
Excuse me
China is a juggernaut rolling over other countries swallowing resourses while more Chinese billionaires and robber barons than any gilded age enjoy their sweet life
The massive inequity is not a function of some developing country mythos, those 'super poor' 20,000 out of work next to the 'super rich' who fill Shanghai is a result of their oligarchy making choices
Nothing more
They can afford to do better, they COULD do better by their citizens, ALL of them.
They don't

From here to there,
[Read the article: No more plastic bags, no more jobs]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
Sorry I don't buy the constant apoligia, the excuses..
The modern Chinese oligarchy merely continues a sad exploitive trend, the warlord propers and the rest, the peasants, are hungry.
Getting from here to there does not have to be zero-sum, China decided that it was easy and quick and properous for the sons and daughters of the elites to play along.
The super rich of Shanghai, the billionaires raising one huge ego driven building after another of course see only the plus side.
There were always other paths, other methods that would have brought the peasants into the light as well but...
It was really not the priority of the Elites, nothing more or less. Given their history it is impossible to believe that they did not know BETTER!

In MN looks like rotation
[Read the article: Peak weed-killer?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
Just read an article in the local MN press that soybean planting was up.
Nitorgen fixing and breaking pest cycles by planting soybeans in corn fields was being encouraged by high prices for fertilizer, herbicide, and pesticide
Apparently soybean prices were rising so the farmer income side was not taking a hit.
Of course consumers contemplating corn. soybean and wheat prices....

Write what you love
[Read the article: How can I get a writing job?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
Lots of good advice but still the best - "writers write"
You want clips? Get a BLOG and write about your passion
Like to cook? BLOG about cooking. Like music? BLOG about music. Like porn? You get the idea...
Suddenly the twelve people on the net who share your passion NOTICE!! This shameless self promotion is good!
Plus writing is how writers get better. Improving is GOOD! People notice.
BLOG your passion and have fun, people notice that too

Northern Minnesota
[Read the article: The brighter side of $115 a barrel crude]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
I'm guessing the area of Northen MN near Lake Superior is the Mining industry, Tacaonite Plants etc.
Plus that area is hugely popular lake and vacation properties that is becoming fairly "Suburban" population density with attendant 'strip mall' build up...
So its not "bad data", thats 10,000 lakes of lake shore being filled up by retiring (driving) baby boomers and not a speck of public transit among them

Northern MN 2
[Read the article: The brighter side of $115 a barrel crude]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
The point about the red around Northern MN is that its NOT sparse population anymore - those are 100 foot frontage lots on every lake and its a bunch of lakes...
Thats a ton of year round houses using energy winter and summer, most of them are BIG and the peole that live there are driving to WalMart. Target, Caribou, and Outback, the same strip malls and shopping centers available to any mid size suburb
That maps likely a realistic appraisal of a real demographic event, baby boomers retiring to their lake homes but don't even imagine what those roads look like every Friday night and sunday night as the diasphora of workers making their weekend trek to THE LAKE, then back home to go to work on Monday

Hybrid Tahoe
[Read the article: Who pays the most for gas?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
At the auto show the other and GMC was pushing their Tahoe SUV Hybrid. Frankly for those of us who need to carry more than the contents of an "opera purse" the teeny roller skate hybrids are not an option.
Interesting to see how the hybrid/green tech scales over time.

A ribbon of lights
[Read the article: Even Las Vegas gets the blues]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
On any given weekend, the freeway from California is a solid ribbon of lights wending toward gambling mecca.
$4/gallon gas this summer is going to play hell with such road trips.
You just have to win the 'fill up' to get home...

Gotta love it
[Read the article: Even Las Vegas gets the blues]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
Just love the snarky condescending tone of the letters. My good-ness the 'holier than thou' just reeks like ummm the horseshit hypocrisy that it is.
Some peole gamble even a lot, some people buy super expensive titanium golf clubs while paying mega for a round of golf and some folks who'll never get it in a milion years, sit on the sidelines and whine.
Me? I'm addicted to sitting in a half circle...
No you wouldn't get it ;)

Another sad rightist fear monger
[Read the article: How to stop illegal Canadian immigration]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Greetings
Its sad that the right is so friggin ignorant of history.
In World War 2 the US and Canada were on the same side, in fact, there was a single army unit made up of citizens of BOTH countries that served with distiction at Anzio Beach...
The road north from Shelby, Montana into Canada is named in honor of the 1st Special Services Force - The Devils Brigade.
To us that live right next to the northern border, who have a grasp of history and friendships that transcend political lunacy, Trancredo once again shows his room temperature IQ and a Republican world view frozen in Nine-One-One politics of fear...
Be afraid Be very afraid. Are you scared yet?
Let me say 9-1-1 again...
Did I mention Tancredo was a moron?
