  • Remembering the denizens of the oil patch

[Read the article: How to solve America's water problems]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Greetings

Living in a freakin' desert and you're surprised it don't rain. The unreality is stunning

    But more to the point:

Remember a few years ago during the big energy crisis, all those bumper stickers down Texas way : "Let the Yankees Freeze in the Dark"

Well guess what, we all remember too!

Texas and energy rich states don't want to share their lovely black gold, so now drink up kids that water aint going south...

Karma is a bitch they say

    Enjoy the journey

  • Hey Doug M from Austin, TX

[Read the article: How to solve America's water problems]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Greetings

FYI, Minnesota's biggest refinery gets its sweet crude from Canada by pipeline.

Drink that black gold or water your lawn with it, makes no never mind to us on the tundra

BTW, I spent a bit of time down around Canyon Lake resevoir and the dam just north of San Antonio. The politics of Texas water are a snakepit...

  • Nulla's posts remind me of that song...

    Greetings

    Remember "Don't Know Much Geography..."

    Nulla, Nulla, Hulla...

Duluth on the west edge of Lake Superior is a busy OCEAN port. Yeah, ocean as in Atlantic... Look it up you'll be amazed

But the biggest problem - the folks in the western desert don't learn ie Las Vegas is busily appropriating the water of northern Nevada to use for Golf Courses, irritating fountains and far too many people.

    And when that's gone?

And when they've sucked Lake Superior dry and every river is diverted to their service?

    What then?

Better they take the pain of "no water" now maybe it will be a teachable moment

There are worse things then winter. Living among 'snowbirds' and eating gtits, for instance

  • Part of it is the folding

[Read the article: The nanotechnological wonders of Damascene steel]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Greetings

The Japanese do "fold" the blade steel as noted but part of the umm magic is also a complex heat treating of the blade involving layers of clay on various parts of the blade as insulation to keep some parts flexible while other parts harden to hold an edge.

The steel on the finest blades is also sourced "Tamahagane" (sp) a particular vein of iron ore of very fine quality and likely some of those useful impurities.

I thought I read that recent archaelogical had found a source for damascene or wootz type steel elsewhere than India, closer to Damascus in the Middle East?

Interesting post: swords and economics - the wonders of the NET thanx

  • A question

[Read the article: The U.S. military inflicts more damage on its own credibility]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Greetings

Were any shots fired by any American Navy Ship in this alleged incident?

    Any kind of shot:

Flare gun, warning shot by a deck gun, machine gun drawing a line of tracers in the water as a deadline?!?

Post-Cole with other small boat threats in the area ie Somalia and Mallacca, the Navy ships have plenty of tools designed to turn your average 'threatening' speedboat into so much floating and sinking debris, QUICKLY!!

The fact that no one in authority charged with protecting ship and crew felt urgent need to use any of those assets EVEN AS WARNING is damning!

Someone tell us the "rules of engagement" for small boat threats and we will likely quickly see this incident as very very bogus indeed

  • What saddens me

[Read the article: The U.S. military inflicts more damage on its own credibility]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Greetings Annonymous,

"...On top of all that, a ship like the USS Port Royal is commanded by a very senior captain with a minimum of 20 years of experience, often much more...."

I'll tell you what saddens me...

Clearly this very senior captain was not NOT feeling any threat from those provocative boats.

He did not fire, even a warning shot. No indication of loud hailer or siren signals

A tense situation was handled calmly and competently ending in no shots fired, no casulties, and no damage to ships of either nation

By the time the media was briefed, this minor incident with no shots fired (hardly equal to any number of Russian Trawler enroachments of the Cold War) was the fucking Battle of Jutland!

That is bullshit and makes me sad and angry

Ihat any member of our Armed Forces played along...

  • The problem

[Read the article: How Wall Street broke the free market]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Greetings

One problem is of course, many of these folks with the money are "not very nice." In the VERY same way that mafia loan sharks are not very nice! They tend to kill people in order to hold power and accumulate the money...

This unfortunate tendency plus the instability of a China happily replaying the "Gilded Age" complete with robber baron capitalists make this global economy a bubble, atop a bubble, inside a bubble...

  • The Catholic Response?

[Read the article: Romney wins Nevada caucuses]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Greetings

Last two general elections that Catholic Church played a major role supporting George Bush with the "Communion Controvery" and big Pro-Life voter push the Sundays before the general election

If 'Mitt the Mormon' is the Republican nominee will the Catholic Bishops overcome their distaste of Mormon apostasy to rally the faithful to the Republican Pro-life cause or do they sit it out...

Even if the bishops press will the 'pew dwellers' vote for a Mormon cultist?

How does the cult of Joseph Smith play outside the 'Mormon West' of Utah, Idaho, and Nevada?

  • Any Democrat

[Read the article: McCain: Clinton would "surrender" in Iraq]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Greetings

Catch a clue kids, after almost 8 years in hell some of you must be punchy.

Any Democrat is better than the BEST Republican.

For anyone to equate the wacky senile ex-POW with a progressive is too fucked up to let pass

Get you head out of your ass and realize the stakes.

The next Prez will appoint several hundred Department Heads, several thousand Federal Committees and Replace ALL THE JUDGES who retire!!!

So what's your pleasure, an FDA run by a Democrat or another anti-science born again... How about the FCC?

Any Democrat gets us out of thus Rightist Neo-Con swamp, the rest is sophistry

    Enjoy the journey
