First day of Alito

I've been listening to the opening statements of Alito's confirmation all day on NPR while I'm at work. And I have to say, one part has left me sour. All of his supporters (I wish I had not have missed Senator Kennedy's remarks) constantly talk about how neutral and unwaivering he is; that he will uphold the constitution regardless of his personal opinions.

Then I hear the radio blare to me, that we are going to pay for all of the killing of our unborn children we've committed. I missed who made the comment, but I find this highly hypocritical considering all of the hot air being said about the seperation of church and state as Alito's been praised.

Well, the great Judge is speaking now, so I'll end here and listen to his wind.

Waivers

This is the first time I've heard of these waivers, but now it makes sense on how I managed to get into Naval boot camp with a 34 degree curature in my spine (scholiosis) in 1996. I remember my recruiter flaunting my ASVAB scores to the other military branch recruiters, all who had offices in the same building. I guess my physical health didn't mean much, because hey, I had the scores.

My two months in the Navy were not fun. When I was leaving, I was informed that the Navy was trying out new boondockers, giving the Navy the highest incidents of stress fractures in their history. I ended up with stress fractures in my feet, ankles, knees and hips, and torn ligaments in both of my ankles. My doctors were unhappy with my slow healing (I could hardly walk even with crutches) and decided that I shouldn't have even made it into boot camp in the first place with my scholiosis. Naval maximum is 26 degrees.

I could never get the physical therapy I needed, and have had arthritus for the past 9 years. I was 19 when I joined the Navy and am now far worse off after my two months in Great Lakes, IL.

survey

I couldn't get the survey to work with FireFox either.

I like the new redesign of Salon, but there are a few things I miss: The old way things were sectioned out and how you could search through them. Also, bring back Sex, please! I feel so lost without it.

I would like to wholeheartedly thank Salon for the BroadSheet. I read it compulsively every day awaiting new updates.

On strike

With Alito's confermation, I've stocked up on batteries for my trusty vibrator. I think a refusal to sleep with men who cannot give women the right to choose what happens to OUR bodies might be a good way to reason with these men.

"Cats and Dogs" - Gorilla Biscuts

Man's best friend is beautiful and affectionate, an ideal pet.

Cats are the same, we make up their names and our love for them is real.

Listen up, I gotta ask you, how can we be so cruel?

You say you care, that's a lie.

My true compassion is for all living things and not just the ones who are cute so I do what I can.

I wanna save lives and I've got a plan.

Under the table he'll eat your dinner like the veggies we can't stand.

What kind of meal would he make?

We don't want to ask it.

Tradition is all that keeps him alive.

Listen up, I gotta ask how can we be so cruel?

You say you care, that's a lie.

My true compassion is for all living things and not just the ones who are cute so I do what I can.

I wanna save lives and I've got a plan.

Why am I so upset.

Don't even own a pet.

I am not trying to press my will.

I am not the first to say...

THOU SHALT NOT KILL

Full is all you want to feel.

We eat to stay alive, but it's their lives we steal.

I think we'd like to change,

but most of us are stuck, that's why cats and dogs have

ALL THE LUCK

Yeah right

Quote:

At least Schlafly never forced her agenda on families in the ugly way Friedan and her cronies did.

----------------------------------------------------

Yeah, she just said all women who were gym teachers were sex crazed dykes wanting to molest school children, all feminists seeking equality were homewreckers, and that women did belong in the home, while she spent 8 months out of the year campaigning to ruin the ratification of the ERA. You're so right, "The Man," that Schlafley campained in a *totally* compassionate way, never once sinking as low as us pesky feminists (this last statement is sarcasm, by the way).

Not convinced

For one, making such a bold statement, and then show you've only interviewed 46 women, to me, is hardly grounds to make such claims. Where did the researchers gain this cross sample from? Outside of broad age range, were these women of different backgrounds, or similar? For example, if this "cross sample" happened to be 46 women interviewed in a Catholic church, then the view would be slanted. 46 just is not enough to convince me. Not to mention, as the article stated, what were the questions? It's been proven that the wording of questions can be formed so that a specific answer is received from them, since certain words have different connotations.

I'm just not convinced with this 9 out of 10 ratio, sorry.
