Thanks to those who've made the point about being a tweener. I was born in 1961 and I feel no connection to the group of individuals described as Boomers. I've always found it interesting that the author of the novel "Generation X", Douglas Coupland, was born the same year as I was.
As for the Boomer vs. GenX "war", I agree that it's manufactured primarily by the media. I work on a team with people who range in age from mid-20s to 50s. While people make jokes about cultural reference points, everyone's work ethic is pretty much the same, in my experience. I don't doubt that there are intergenerational conflicts, but I think they get blown out of proportion because they make great headlines.
I've only heard Groban sing a couple of times and he may be technically talented, but the author hit the nail on the head about his songs are dreck. I have the same visceral reaction to him that I have whenever I hear Celine Dion...change the station/channel.
It never would have occured to me to equate Groban with opera, although classical pop fits, I suppose. I have no problem with these guys making a buck on the latest trend. If people get pleasure from it, that's great. It's like the boy band or Latin music crazes. These manufactured "popera" stars will have their day in the sun until the masses move onto the next popular music trend.
I'm not a big fan of either Lance or Sheryl, but Rebecca you should really get your facts straight before labelling someone a douchebag. Lance did not leave his wife and kids for Sheryl Crow. And, there have got to be bigger celebrity douchebags you could have picked for this category.
Heather was completely spot on in her analysis of what Dirt is such a crappy show.
her eyes are empty and her voice is flat and unwavering
I don't think it has so much to do with the script as it does with Courtney Cox being barely able to act. I've never seen a drama where she's been anything but leaden. I didn't watch Friends so I can't comment on her deftness with comedy, but it is hard to believe that this woman made millions of dollars from her acting skills.
The Kims made some unfortunate errors in judgement and paid a deadly price for them. Calling James Kim an idiot is uncalled for, but I don't think it is unfair for people to point out the choice that they made that clearly show a lack of common sense. Moving rocks out of the road? Disregarding signs? I'm no wilderness expert, but I can't imagine a rational person doing all of this. As someone else said, maybe they were extremely tired.
People make mistakes that cost them their lives every day, but not every family gets the opportunity to pontificate about it in a major U.S. newspaper. I think it was rather unfortunate for the Post to print Spencer Kim's piece given how fresh his grief is.
When a rural dirt road that climbs through the mountains is easily accessible from a main highway, one might expect that non-locals are going to try it without the proper vehicle or equipment.
Except that the "rural dirt road" was a logging road and it wasn't off a "main highway". The logging road was off of Bear Creek Road, which is a paved, one lane road. Not exactly a main highway. It's not like there was a dirt road off hwy. 5 with an exit ramp enticing the random traveller to take it.
Really I do. But it's lame. It seems to be made with (surprise, surprise) the gratification of heterosexual men in mind. They're happy to sit (or fast-forward) through the pretentious dialogue to get to the girl-on-girl action.
I'm not. And I hate the way it separates the women from the rest of society instead of showing them as a normal part of it. I'm just tired of seeing gay people portrayed as aliens. The longer that goes on, the longer that (mis)conception will remain.
The crazy thing is that the people behind the show are lesbians. I think that Ilene Chaiken went off the deep end after she got involved with ezgirl, the *cough* genius *cough* behind the music (including the lame ass theme song).
Did you accidentally mistake The Fix for News & Politics? The Fix is a gossip column with links to other gossip columns/websites. The nature of gossip is that it's not always true and doesn't warrant Washington Post-level investigate reporting. It's supposed to be fun. If you want reporting, don't click on the The Fix.
Heather, I'm surprised at how lightly you appear to be treating the incident between Marcel and Cliff. They aren't family, so you analogy with your brother holds no water. Imagine a colleague waking you up while you are sleeping and pinning you to the ground while someone else screams to have someone shave you? I don't care how big of an ass everyone perceives Marcel to be, he didn't deserve that. Cliff was rightly booted, but the rest of the yahoos who urged him on or sat giggling are just as guilty of exercising incredibly bad judgement. I wished they'd tossed the lot of them. The cast this season is full of petty, unprofessional, immature punks. Gimme Tiffani over this bunch, any day.
