@AuKestrel - there's no fallacy

Gigi_Knowles is saying that her life is wonderful without children. Why can't you just accept that and be happy for her without jumping on her with your judgmental comment? Why should I believe that you're happy having children when you haven't lived a life without them. How can you be sure that your life is better with them than without? See how silly that sounds? Gigi_Knowles, I'm very happy for you. You seem to have built a great life, kudos!

Reading through the letters I've been by and large suprised by the restraint shown. Sure there's the occasional letter that suggests the LW doesn't really know herself if she doesn't want children, or that she'll change her mind, or having children makes you a better person. But those seem to be relatively few. Oh, and no one did the old, "but who will take care of you when you're old!??!" whine.

Agile Cyborg, you're a letter writing machine. Wow. It's great that you stay home with your kids and are an active dad and know others like yourself. Still, that doesn't mean it's the norm and I could introduce you to a dozen or more families where I live in which the working moms do the lion share of the child rearing compared to the working dads. These are Gen X folks by the way in a very liberal town. It still surprises me.

I know several couples where both didn't want children and neither have changed their minds after many years of marriage. I know a few couples where one partner did change their mind and those marriages ended. The most recent was a situation where the wife said before marriage that she wanted kids, a year into the marriage she changed her mind. Her husband left her a week later. A few months later he met someone new. As soon as the divorce was final the husband remarried. And, almost 9 months later (I kid you not) they had a child.

So given the huge stakes involved here for the LW, I think the best thing she and her husband can do is see a counselor and hash this all out. I think it would give them a safe place to work out their feelings on the matter.

Original article: "Hannah Montana: The Movie"

Miley and the Disney factory kids

I have to say I feel a bit sorry for Cyrus and her Disney brethren. As those of us well past the age of 12 know, this type of fame is very fleeting. It's only the extremely rare child star that maintains their success into adulthood. Given that Miley is neither a good singer nor actress, I can't see that she really has a future in the biz once the 12 years old move on. What makes it sadder, to me, is that like many a teen idol she conflates popularity amongst preteens as a confirmation of her talent. The sad truth is that its easy to sell crap to 8 year olds when its packaged in a way to make them mad with desire for said product. How else could the wildly untalented Olsen Twins have amassed a billion dollars? It also skeeves me out how much her father is riding her coattails. He really wouldn't have a career right now without her. So, I hope she's socked away her millions so that she'll have a decent life in the future and won't have to sell herself any more than her parents have already.

Original article: Party like it's 1995!

@melissasbatmen - what were you doing the last 8 years

Did you support Bush's massive spending? I bet you didn't care. It really is hard to take you folks seriously. You're more than happy to continue letting the Repubs use you. Have fun.

Loved the closing comment

That seems to be a constant refrain from people looking at this from the outside? Why didn't they protest Bush? Did they suddenly have an epiphany in the last 3 months?

I think a good chunk of these folks are appalled that their party is no longer in power. They can't deal with Obama being president. They fume that his approval ratings are in the 60s. It's too much for them. Even if he cut their taxes in half and gave them all a lollipop and a pony they would still find some reason to hate him. He's a socialist! He's Hitler! He's a facist. He's a muslin! As wacky as they are, I'd rather have them taking out their frustrations in tax protests than through more nefarious means.

Oh, Xrandadu Hutman deserves a star for that limerick

Someone get Rush on the line, stat!

Rush has got to get on this Jindal thing and nip it in the bud, quick like. We can't have our Republican hopefuls going off message like this. Countdown to the inevitable apology starts now.

They aren't going to read the report.

This was the year we stopped watching

My husband was really into the show. It was tolerable because we DVR'd the episodes and fast forwarded through Paula, the product placements, and pre-singing banter. We also mostly ff'd through the auditions because, like tomreedtoon mentions, the cruelty shown by the producers was too much.

After watching the first two competitive episodes this season, we dumped it. One big reason was that, to us, most of the contestants were unoriginal; the same old voices we hear every year. Now, I hear the howls of protest, "What about Adam Lambert? He's original". Fine, but I just don't hear it. The other reason was that I was tired of hearing songs I've always enjoyed butchered on AI. Which brings me to this:

"I would love to hear him sing Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell". It would absolutely bring the house down!"

It's like movies remakes. Hate them. I know the kids on AI have to sing something, but there are classic songs that are so identifiable with an artist that they should be left alone, including the one mentioned above.
