Liberals Relent on Iraq War Funding

House Likely to Pass Bill With Pullout Date

    By Jonathan Weisman

    Washington Post Staff Writer

    Friday, March 23, 2007; Page A01

Liberal opposition to a $124 billion war spending bill broke last night, when leaders of the antiwar Out of Iraq Caucus pledged to Democratic leaders that they will not block the measure, which sets timelines for bringing U.S. troops home.

The acquiescence of the liberals probably means that the House will pass a binding measure today that, for the first time, would establish tough readiness standards for the deployment of combat forces and an Aug. 31, 2008, deadline for their removal from Iraq.

A Senate committee also passed a spending bill yesterday setting a goal of bringing troops home within a year. The developments mark congressional Democrats' first real progress in putting legislative pressure on President Bush to withdraw U.S. forces.

Even more than the conservative Democrats leery of appearing to micromanage the war, House liberals have been the main obstacle to leadership efforts to put a timeline on the withdrawal of U.S. forces. They have complained that the proposal would not bring troops home fast enough. Their opposition has riven the antiwar movement, split the Democratic base and been the main stumbling block to the legislation, which had originally been scheduled for a vote yesterday.

Yes, it was a miserable defeat those unorganized Dems suffered yesterday when they passed a bill to reign in the Leader. The Reich will indeed last 1000 years with these people as an opposition. We can all rest easy. (those of us who fear "show trails," at least.

I recommend Chalmers Johnson's Blowback and sequels for more context. There is actually more to learn and understand than what you point out and what Glenn can produce here.

I'm starting to realize even the neocons have little to do with the current situation. America is war. It's our way of life without us knowing it, and has been so since the Cold War.

Syspro raises something I was wondering about. When Iran took 8 British sailors in 2004, who was at fault? Do we know?

And the First Sea Lord's statement at the time is highly relevant. I wondered why a captain would allow his sailors to be taken. Either he knew he was in the wrong or he was under orders to let them go without firing on them, i.e., he was following anti-escalatory rules. Unlikely that it was an attempt to trick Iran into provoking us, surely.

Glenn is right that the media practically make the Revolutionary Guards out to be pirates. We still don't know anything.

I've got some elephant bane to sell you.

Scooter, a history quiz for you: What American official trapped the USSR in Afghanistan, leading to the collapse of the USSR?

"Essentially" the same thing. Uh-huh. So you agree there is a difference between arming a resistance movement to fight a puppet government and arming an opposition to an elected government supported by the majority of the population? And breaking the law to do so? Oh scooter.

(Not to deny that arming the fundamentalist Muslims has proved to have far more catastrophic consequences than arming the contras. And not to argue that Democratic imperialism is much better than Republican imperialism.)

Poor Scooter. Not smarter than Carter.

    Why not move to France?

Breaking news for Salon: Jihad means you must convert to Islam, die, or submit to Islamic oppression of non-believers. (The USA is not the problem.) It's all in the Islamic scriptures. Since Salon is only now (thanks to me) aware of this situation, I suggest some of you move to France and see for yourself why French Jews are leaving for the USA in the thousands. May you shake off your ignorance.

    -- former useful idiot

There are thousands of Jews left in France?

    Sing along now:

    "Because it's in the Koran

    It's written in the Koran

A world united under Allah is

    The future of man

How could it not be so

    When most opposing us panic

And surrender once a few of them have bled?"

Nothing like a good song to drown out reality and raise the spirits.

I realize that the concept of the 'rugged individual' has become so bastardized as to lend support to the idea of total assimilation and lack of individual thought. How can it be that one concept can be, without the attention of ANYONE, subverted to mean the totally opposite concept?

That's an excellent observation. What can I say---we're good at it, I guess. In a sense, that is precisely what Glenn has been aiming at, at least since I started reading him. How does myth become policy? lies, truth?
