  • Hey Paul in KY

[Read the article: The farmer formerly known as Marvin]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Note I said 'criminal' not 'burden'. There's a big difference between a person having mental/physical problems that require some form of governmental/institutional help & a criminal who preys on other people. That is what we call a 'nuance'."

Ok then, just the babies of criminals then...why just the rapists? Why not ALL of them, if they are so predispositioned to be criminals?

"By the way, I note you haven't commented on my & another poster's assertion that all the poor aborted fetuses go to heaven anyway, so what's the big deal?"

Actually I did - I said the yes they go to heaven but does that mean that they don't deserve a chance at a life?

"Here's another one for you to ponder: Why should a woman who has been assaulted in a manner that causes the assaulter to serve a long prison sentence have to carry the result of the assault for 9 months and in doing so possibly damage her long-term health or even suffer a complication that results in her death?"

Hummm...possibly damage her long-term health or suffer complications versus definitely killing a viable human being. Not much to ponder here.

  • Not a chance

[Read the article: Time columnist: Gore-Obama in '08?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Al Gore could not win his own state in the 2000 election and he still could not win it today. I cannot imagine a scenario in which he could win the Presidency, frankly.

  • Indeed

And since people are not traveling as much, they are not spending as much. And since they are not spending as much, the economy will suffer.

Hence the LOGICAL solution would be for the US to drill for more oil here at home, build new refineries to produce more, and to lower, if not eliminate entirely, the federal and state taxes on gasoline.

The economy would then bounce back dramatically.

    Electro Robot,

"Because nothing in America changes until it's a crisis, a panic. And when the government needs to recall 50 or 100 troops to quell the rebellions at home then we will leave Iraq. You can ballpark that collapse at no more than 5 years from now."

Oh I disagree. When it hits people in the pocketbook, a LOT changes. People WILL drive less and spend less and that will take a serious toll on the economy.

Now, when the politicians find they are getting less money to spend due to this, THEN they will do something about it...OR when the PEOPLE start burning their fellow politicans and removing them from office...that would get their attention too, as they LIKE their jobs. The problem with the last suggestion is, people don't hold their politicans accountable for STUPID decisions.

    CParis1,

"Unemployed former commuters no longer on the road cuts down on overall driving levels. See, Bush does have a program to reduce greenhouse gases!"

Sorry but this time it's difficult to blame the President. We have not been able to build a new refinery in this country since 1974. Why? Because every time it goes to court, a group of ecologists fight it and the judge bends backward for them. Further, the oil wells we DO have have all been capped and try getting permission to open them!

Granted, the President does have some responsibility here...but not ALL of it!

  • Seems to me

[Read the article: "Great American Hypocrites: Toppling the Big Myths of Republican Politics"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

that it would have been a BETTER book if it had toppled the Big Myths on BOTH sides of politics.

After all, hypocrites exist in BOTH parties.

  • ANYONE who's been in a war

[Read the article: McCain's Vietnam obsession]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

knows it affects you forever. How much MORE so for someone who was a POW?

BTW, many people support the war for different reasons. One of the ones for those in the military is, they don't want those who have died to have died for nothing. That's a big one that those who fought in Viet Nam felt. What was worse was, we could have won Viet Nam but were held back. After a long time, we then left and surrendered the war to the Viet Cong. Many vets have never forgiven America for not supporting them when they needed the support most.

While you may or may not disagree with this assessment, this is how many Viet Nam Vets feel about it and could also explain McCain's attitude as well.

  • Good Luck with that!

[Read the article: Barack Obama, working-class hero?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Obama tries to impress blue-collar white voters. He'll need them to keep the state close in April -- or to win it in November"

Yeah, good luck with that...ESPECIALLY when you have a reverand who you support who says "God D@mn America."

Your chances of keeping them are about as good as a snowball's chances with Satan.

  • Talk to

one of the women who are headed to an abortion clinic. You may be able to convince them to allow you to adopt their baby.

    Couldn't hurt to ask anyway.

  • Exit Strategy

[Read the article: McCain's Vietnam obsession]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Frankly, I would create a permanent post there, financed and manned by closing posts in Germany, pull most of our troops back except for those on the post and tell the Iraqi government we are there to support their army but that the Iraqi government had to take charge.

This would show the Iraqi government we were there to support them for the long haul, show the Iraqi people we mean to support their movement to freedom, show the Iraqi Army we will be there if they need us and show al-Qaeda we aren't going away.

Also, it would leave a three-prong launching area available to our soldiers if we are needed anywhere in the Middle East...with Isreal, Iraq and Afghanistan being well situated to allow for launching missions if required.

This is the only "exit strategy I can come up with that will not lead to a blood-bath. Not a perfect strategy but one that I think would work.

    John762,

"(Changing parties to cause this type of mischief is a felony in some states indecently, but then again respect for the law has never really held the repubs back before)."

John, this has been going on from BOTH parties for a VERY long time. Nothing new here.
