re: gotta break some bad news about supply-side to you
[Read the article: John McCain's radical tax plan]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]@ stet,
"For example: Clinton raised taxes. The government realized more funds; the economy boomed, rich people got richer. Maybe you just didn't shout "Swiss Bank Account" loud enough."
Sorry but your example is groundless as Clinton raised taxes AFTER the economic boom granted from the advancements of the computer age which made tech stocks soar. This of course in turn made a larger number of people paying in more tax money because more people were in a higher tax bracket. But those who were already in the higher tax bracket did precisely what I just said.
"What the rich do when their taxes are raised is continue to try to make more money. How do you think they got or stay rich?"
They either try to protect the money they have by tax breaks or they will reduce their spending to retain their wealth. Sure they will try to earn more...but the more they earn the more tax shelters they will look for.
"Let's think this through. Their effective top tax rate goes from (say) 30% to 40%. Ok, along comes an opportunity to make $10 million. They say: "Oh my goodness. If I take this opportunity, I will only clear $6 million after taxes instead of $7 million. Obviously, this is now a bad deal. As a rich person, I must now go fire one of my butlers and stop being distracted by these opportunities.""
Hardly...but let's say someone normally earns $340,000 a year...and has an opportunity to earn an additional $50,000...why would they do that if it put them in a higher tax bracket? Hence they would pass on that, or try to get their payment delayed until the following year, to prevent paying more in taxes.

All they really have to do
[Read the article: House GOP candidates given go-ahead to run against party]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]is simply point out Speaker Pelosi adjourn the House without passing a single appropriations bill which hasn't happened since the 1950s and also failed to address off-shore drilling at all.
TWO good subjects to run on, I'd say.

Well I gotta say
[Read the article: Karl Rove's election predictions]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]that given the current polls in those locations, the man might not be wrong.

I doubt this could work
[Read the article: A softer line on abortion]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Because most people are going to look at your voting record to see which way you've been going. And being this is an election year, they are also going to EXPECT pandering to get elected.

Oh PLEASE
[Read the article: A hint of freedom for Iraqi women]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Think she could have VOTED under Saddam? Think she could have gone to school under Saddam?
And why is she afraid to go out dressed in a shirt and blue jeans? Because of the Muslim clerics gangs that go around terrorizing them.
Think they weren't doing that BEFORE we invaded? Hell, they were doing that and worse.
Give me a break. You may or may not agree with the war, but don't try telling me things are worse for women now than they were before we went in.

Sorry but
[Read the article: Johnny, I hardly knew ye]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I never did like Edwards.
Maybe it's because he's a lawyer but I just never could warm up to him. He always struck me as like other lawyers.

Ok

"Everything's comin' up grits and gravy in Iraq today."
Have you been to either Afghanistan or Iraq?

Um
[Read the article: Happy days are here again!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Myself, I would wait until AFTER the convention. We really don't know what's going to happen yet.
Let's see if they can pull together and stop the in-fighting.

I always thought
[Read the article: A pre-convention memo to Hillary Clinton]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Hillary did what she wanted to do and while listening to her campaign team, she always chose her own route.
That being said, I think it's up to her. If she thinks she still has a chance, she's going to go for it.
Should be interesting.

Well
[Read the article: Is McCain winning?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]According to Reuters he is!

Wonder how this will play out in the two conventions?

Trust me
[Read the article: Dixie is gone with the wind]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I live in the South...it would take a LOT to change this region to blue.
As a matter of fact, I would almost be tempted to say it's impossible!

Speaking of Secession
[Read the article: Dixie is gone with the wind]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]ELYDOG,
In point of fact, secession is NOT unconstitutional as far as I've ever been able to ascertain from my reading of it...however, since precedence has been set due to the Civil War, it could be argued that it is now against government policy to allow it.
BTW, it is true that the South has given more than it's fair share of soliders to fight in our wars. It is considered honorable to fight for ones country in the south.
Ironic that the south wanted to leave the union in the 1800's and the north forced them to stay. Now, the north would love to lose the south. Guess this is one of those "be careful what you wish for" moments.
