"That's a brilliant idea. Certainly forcing every country in the world to allow us to monitor their internal social and political environment with our military and espionage apparatus can only endear us to the earth's people. We're about halfway there already, anyway, and as envinced by the precipitous drop in anti-American terrorism worldwide since 2000, our strategy of interfering in the internal politics of other countries is going gangbusters."

I BELIEVE I said earlier with the consent of the country it is to be posted in.

By the way, this is not sarcasm.

"The Iraqi government as it is currently constituted cannot meaningfully consent to an agreement with the United States."

Meaning the government cannot stand on it's own. Ok.

"The US currently has tens of thousands of soldiers and contractors operating in Iraq. The Iraqi government by its own admission and ours cannot stand in its current form without our military support. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the very lives of the individual members of that government are continually in US hands. The US is holding all of the country's billions in foreign reserves. The Iraqi military was disbanded and rebuilt in a form that cannot function without US logistical support."

If the above you have just said is true, then how can we leave them without a fully functioning government? It would ensue anarchy, would it not? So you are making the argument we should stay then?

"International law does not preclude the possibility of prosecuting former child soldiers for serious criminal offenses."

OK...here's your answer right here. He WASN'T a "former child soldier". He was a civilian guerrilla. The problem is, there IS NO international law governing guerrillas.

  • True, being shot down doesn't qualify you for President

HOWEVER, it DOES show that you have some leadership experience if you have lead a group of guys.

Now the problem is, NEITHER of these two expected nominees have held an executive position...so we have to judge them on whatever leadership experience they HAVE had.

"they just Know they are capable of evil. does that knowledge make one better or just get one kicked out of the garden? everyone knows someone who was in the service - do you think they would make a good judge? mayor? teacher? if you're lucky they make a good drink - or drunk."

Sir, you have obviously never been in the military. The idea that a soldier must be a drunk or a killer or whatever is not true. Granted, soldiers MUST kill at times...but so do police officers. Do you think THEY are evil as well? How about doctors who have to do triage and decide who has a better chance of living if worked on...are they evil as well?

Or if you are thinking just of soldiers, are the soldiers who fought in WWI or WWII or even the Revolutionary War evil?

You're knowledge of soldiers is obviously a stereotype.

    @david sugarman,

Sir, you obviously have not read history...or you would never have said such a thing. Of COURSE democracy is important to us military type. Why in the world do you think we would join the military...for the money? For the educational benefits? Please. You can get far more without risking your life.

So, ok...you didn't go...that HARDLY puts you in a position to criticize those who DID go. You did what YOU thought was right and they did what they thought was right. No one is criticizing you for not going here, yet you feel free to criticize those who did. Interesting.

So you consider cops bullies, huh. Ok, then why do you call for help from them when you need it? If they truely were the bullies you claim they are, they would doubtless help the offender with their theft or attack or whatever against you.

So you think doctors are mostly in it for the bucks - tell that to the doctors working at the clinics, or the doctors who work pro bono, or the hospitals who take in patients who can't pay.

One final note, we do indeed have a volunteer Army...and you should be thankful for that. Without one, who would protect this country? If you don't want to volunteer, that's fine...we who do serve know it isn't for everyone. Just don't put us down for joining...we do serve a useful purpose.

    @ david sugarman

"that is their PURPOSE. that is, soldiers kill those who disagree to make the rest agree whether they like it or not. sometimes it's really JUST to kill, like the gas chambers and the firebombing of tokyo. and sometimes it's to simply be cruel - like napalming villagers (which McCain either did, or abetted, or enabled or "would have")."

Sir, you show a great deal of ignorance about the military. The purpose of the military is to prevent aggression against the country, to provide protection of various friendly countries throughout the world and to provides security for this nation by maintaining a strong presence throughout the world. Our role is NOT simply to kill. If that was the only mission of the military, you could simply dismantle the military and contract mercenaries to accomplish the same thing...of course you'd ALSO have to worry that the mercenaries would turn on you the first time someone offered more money to them as well.

"the role of police is (slightly) different - their purpose is to keep rich people's stuff safe and to bully the rest into complying with some fool's regulations."

You surely do not believe that that the only mission police officers have is to protect rich people's items and to bully everyone else. Their job is to enforce the law and to maintain peace in the locations...you know, protect and to serve.

You sound VERY pessimistic. Perhaps you should TALK to the people who's jobs you seem to find cruel and overbearing. You may find that they are more professional than you believe.
