Damn, zzz05 beat me to it

The Doukhobors were a fascinating bunch, communal pacifists from Russia (Tolstoy actually paid most of the cost of getting them to Canada). A splinter group, the Sons of Freedom, resisted government efforts to school their children, end the communal way of life, and force them to register in the census, by taking off all their clothes (human skin, being made by god, is more perfect than man-made clothing anyway) and burning all their possessions (including their houses). It was pretty dramatic, and provided many a Canadian boy with his first picture of naked breasts back in the 20s and then 60s. Didn't work though.

They're still around, though they don't do the nude arson thing anymore.

@J.C. Miller

Just to make it more ironic and complex J.C., you are quoting from a post that Salon saw fit to delete. Was that "angry, or being humorous or ironic, sarcastic, exasperated, condescending, objectifying, cynical or what?

Guess I won't get my red star today, darn.

The Best They Can Do?

I agree Tracy, I was kinda creeped out by the whole article too. But then Emily Yoffe has been a pretty poor advice columnist since she filled in as "Dear Prudence" what two years ago now? Rather into the moralizing and keep the marriage together school.

But then, with Cary Tennis' utterly boring advice column, I'm not sure Salon is in a position to brag. Both zines should probably give up and just carry Savage Love, if that is the best they can do.

Bye

I dunno, on the one hand we have Salon generally and BroadSheet in particular going into vapid video land, and on the other, a commenter community that was nasty to begin with and is getting increasingly toxic, disturbed, and almost, no, clearly, racist, on top of being misogynistic and trollish.

I'm not sure I want to hang around here any more. I get enough racist type bashing of single moms, and idiots opining about poverty from the perspective of Ayn Rand, in my real life, I don't need it here too. Tired of kicking against the pricks, I guess.

I pretty much stopped watching actal tv at all about 4 years ago, don't know why I would want to watch a pale laggy shadow of the Discovery Channel on the internet. Go on, lay some one-to-many civics 101 on me, I'll do the same thing I did in high school and read a book instead while I sit in the back row. Except I am a grown up now, and don't have to sit in anybody's back row. Show your educational videos to yourselves, thanks.

That's the thing about a business move, you lose your old customers in the hope of something better, and lately, I can see how that might look like a good idea. I hope the vapid video thing works out for Salon. I don't think it will, but what do I know? As Barnum once said, nobody ever broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

There is probably some Web2.0 cool business synergy thang going on that is above my pointy little head anyway. But me, I have no desire at all to dig BigThink or CurrentDotCom, they both blow, really, all old media warmed over like last night's pizza.

Yeah, I will continue to support the ACLU, I always have put my money where my mouth is. Though this video kinda shook the faith a little, I don't like being talked down to. And I will probably keep on reading Salon and BroadSheet time to time. You go girls, you'll be on tv one day! (But I won't be watching.)

Bye

My Left Ear

I'll have you know my left ear is magic. One look at it and Sam the One Man Marching Band Man downtown swooned and busked for me for two straight hours! I went to the Philharmonic, and the orchestra stood and gave me a standing O!

Plastic surgeons gasp when they see it and haul out sketch pads and scribble furiously. I have been offered thousands of dollars by jewelry modeling agencies and telecommunications advertising companies, and there is talk of Hollywood offering me a body-double role in Cloony's next pic!

I am riding to success, fame and fortune on my Magic Left Ear!

Ick

Amerigo, you creep me out, and I'm a guy.

If my left ear could call you out, it would.

Worse Than?

Me, I'd rather have my daughters play Grand Theft Auto, you know, random theft, prostitution, cop-killing, all that good wholesome stuff.

(Well, actually, they do...)

My Experience

In my experience as a manager, younger, childless women by and large are the hardest workers. However, older women with children are generally more effective. Young single guys have generally been my laziest employees, and married dads seem to have a bit more commitment to the job.

Now these aren't lawyers, but still, my experience over the last 15 years or so that I have been managing people has been pretty consistent.

Can a game corrupt you

Speeder, my attitude is more along the lines of "chill out, people." Personally, I think GTA is vile, as is Miss Bimbo, but in games and humor we tend to mock the things that scare us, to ape things we don't do in real life. Its the old Plato/Aristotle debate: does inappropriate entertainment corrupt us or purge us of ignoblity?

I really don't think either actually applies, I don't believe playing Miss Bimbo is any more likely to turn girls into anorexic sluts than playing GTA will turn them into crazed cop-killers.
