"But I'm surprised and disappointed to see that this assumption is so intractable that it applies even to demonstrably false claims. She lied. There's a recording -- documentary proof. She admits that she lied. It is not some sort of "possibility." There is overwhelming proof (including her own admission) that the rape story was false."-- TheOtherBob
So you have seen this incontrovertible documentary evidence, evaluated its context, know for absolute sure that there is no 'possibility' involved, and thus know for sure what happened and you can pass judgment? (Ever seen the movie "The Conversation" for instance?)
Wow.
Very impressive sir, I am in awe that you can reconstruct reality so concretely from such little evidence. I wish I were as certain about my last bank statement as you are about the (closely held) facts, such as they are, of this case.
Well, as someone once said, judge not lest ye be judged. You ready for that standard?
(I'm not.)
And your readiness to do so tells us more about you yourself, than the case itself, thankyouverymuch.
Here trollie trollie trollie! Here trollie trollie trollie.
Man, this is just going to be raw meat for the BroadSheet Troll Posse (TM).
Personally, I would suspect under-reporting is a far bigger issue than false accusations-- any woman that has paid the slightest attention to a newspaper or a TV show knows that the consequences of making an allegation, true or false, are going to be highly unpleasant for her.
And in my experience, and I have some relevant experience, is that most of the time the cops and prosecutors are usually pretty good at sniffing out false accusations. Which is why it is such a big deal when one goes forward and then is overturned (a la Duke) for example. (Which was pretty much attributable to a prosecutor with an IQ only slightly above that of a fruit fly and yen for publicity, a very dangerous combination.)
Anyway, we don't really know enough about the Hofstra incident yet to know what the heck happened, and probably never will, so not naming the complainant is probably the right choice (the accused should never have been named either, incidentally).
And guibuu still powns Salon.
Have you no self respect? Have you no competent techies?
Now, I just had to sit back and enjoy the irony, this reeking sack of shit going on about he hates liars more than anything. It is simply dethpicable, to quote Daffy. Simply dethpicable, like everything about him.
I think he secretly wants to grab his ankles, it would make him very happy indeed. Some gigantic hairy gay biker top should oblige him one of these days. Unless he would rather have some uber stone butch peg him. I am sure it could be arranged.
This is actually completely backwards:
"...they tend to be the first to be laid off first during tough economic times..."
In fact, given that women are vastly over-represented in government and charity, and in other poorly paid low-level jobs, they tend to be the LAST to get laid off. It is the expensive (mostly male) managers and professionals that go first.
Being supported by your wife puts profound strains on traditional relationships, and is as near as I can figure out one of the leading causes of the dramatic spike we are seeing in domestic violence cases, right across the "developed world".
Otherwise, right on.
(Oh, and Confucius, please don't feed the trolls. The one you are responding to has actually managed to get himself banished from Salon multiple times, under a variety of handles, which really takes some doing.)
Boy, it sure didn't take the BroadSheet Troll Posse (TM) long get into full riot/abuse mode.
"And while we all have our trigger points, it would seem that spending a little extra time cooling off might at least give us time to figure out what story we are actually in."
Indeed.
I thought it was a thoughtful, well-rounded article, that came to an obviously correct conclusion.
(Oh, and the spittle must have been flying on some computer screens: of course the thing is signed, all BroadSheet posts are signed. Just look down at bottom of the story, and there it is, in nice little italics: ― Amy Benfer. Idiots.)
And why on earth should nursing bras not be "sophisticated and stylish" or or "frilly and lacy?" (Though in truth, pregnancy precedes lactation, the two do not generally coincide, thank Darwin).
I found my pregnant wife insanely sexy each time she was. It made me very hot indeed. I was NOT "faintly amused/turned on," I was crazy hot to trot. You'd be surprized how many men are in that situation.
It may not be part of our culture's stereotypical storyline, but I simply do not understand why this could be regarded as in any way perverted or a fetish of any kind; your pregnant partner feeling sexy, your finding her sexy, should be regarded as a Good Thing, shouldn't it? It is practically obscene to think that we shouldn't.
Lingerie and related retailers that recognize this are to be celebrated and supported, not mocked.
