Original article: Space balls

"Oh, I get it!"--No you don't.

"Americans are the Cylons, monomaniacal imperialist Orientalist colonialist brutalists (sorry, the "ists" got away from me there) oppressing the spunky, noble humans, read "the Arab Middle East," who just want to live in peace and are only forced to dehumanizing violence to defend against assimilation to evil values!

My thanks to the writer for collapsing many hours of hamfisted propaganda to a less than five-minute read."

No. You don't get it. First, no where in the article does it state what you think it stated. If you thought it was implied, you're just showing off your own bias.

Just to clarify for others who might think the same way:

The producers and writers have never taken a liberal/conservative, democrat/republican, america/terrorist or what-have-you position on their show. They do show things like terrorism, insurgency, warfare etc, but don't simply map that to our real world politics.

The politics and situations in Galactica are very gray. There isn't a clear right side and wrong side. However, we do empathize with the humans because they are, after-all, human like us.

Correction

"for fear of marginalizing Iraqi leaders in exile"

NYT actually says, "for fear it would marginalize Iraqi leaders who had NOT gone into exile"

You can also use . . .

If you're using FireFox you can also use an extension called "Repagination" found at

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2099/

You don't need to install Greasemonkey (which may be overkill), and it will work for any site.

With this extension, you right-click a next-page link, and you can choose whether you want to see the next 5, 10, 15 etc pages or all at once.

Fine with me . . . except the Font change

It would be great to change the font style back. Thanks.

Thanks Glenn

For introducing me to another great journalist. It was great to see Knight-Ridder/McClatchy Washington Bureau mentioned. I wonder what BushCo thought would happen with all their accumulated power once a Democrat became President? I guess they were planning for a permanent Repub in that position. Oh well, sucks to be them!

Original article: Salon wins Webby award

Congratulations Salon!

Unlike some who only post to whine how crappy Salon has become and how "this is the reason I stopped my subscription" or some such whiney crap like that (cough, Victoria L, cough), I was very happy to renew my subscription this morning.

RE: Greg Sargent

I only watched the first few minutes because the sound was bad. Since I use a headphone, I don't like the way left and right channels were split for the voices. Smith said Greg Sargent at TPM Horse's Mouth didn't do any reporting on the Politico. I beg to differ:

PS: Glenn, your head is much smaller than your illustration would suggest ;)

Please make images larger or at least provide PDFs

It would be trivial to have a scaled down image to fit the page but then when you view just the image itself, it goes to full size.

Glenn: a question

Do you ever inform your representative or senator about the concerns you write up? Or do you just hope that your readership will take it beyond your blog?

But she has immunity

I would think immunity status absolves her from getting into trouble from DOJ rules

Bashing ourselves

I agree with you Glenn that there were certain Democrats (Levin, Obama) who from the start poisoned the well of debate by equating defunding with not supporting troops.

But what I'm most dismayed by is what's happening now in the liberal blogs and on liberal radio.

I hear and read over and over again that the Democrats are weak. They are afraid. You said these things yourself. You talked about "the principal flaw of Democrats". I hear things like "the Democrats are doing it again". I wonder why we talk about ourselves like that. Is it true? Or is it just another Republican frame that we've bought into and continually perpetuate? Why do we want to make it easy on the Republicans to bash us?

I've been wondering if, in the same way, there's something we Democrats say about Republicans that the Republicans use against themselves. I can't think of any.

You talk about the "flaw of the Democrats" and what "they are" and what "they do" like it's a single easily describable entity. Why are "they" are like this?

I don't know. It's just been depressing to see us bash ourselves.

Red State FTW!

I'll take Red State over (the aptly named) Rabbit Bites any day. I first saw them the other day commenting on the new creation museum. Funniest thing I'd seen in a long time.

Injustice Supreme

I want to hi-light this matter from TPM:

Bummer for this dude (USAToday, June 21, 2007) ...

The Supreme Court made it harder Thursday for most defendants to challenge their federal prison sentences.

Appeals courts that review prison terms imposed by trial judges may deem them reasonable if they fall within federal sentencing guidelines adopted in the mid-1980s, the high court said.

The justices upheld a 33-month sentence given to Victor Rita for perjury and making false statements. Rita is a 25-year military veteran and former civilian federal employee.

The prison term falls within the guidelines range and was upheld by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, posing the question of whether sentences within the guidelines ordinarily will be considered reasonable.

From ABC: "Rita had sought a sentence lower than 33 months, based on his physical condition -- he has diabetes and other illnesses -- his likely vulnerability in prison and his military service in Vietnam and in Operation Desert Storm."
