@Filthy Harry

McCain leaping over the podium? I can't even visualize it. He's got that old man shuffle going on...not going to be any McCain leaping, I don't think!

Hey humorless liberal,

How come you change your user name all the time? Is it just a mood thing? Or a commentary on outside events?

I have to say, I liked cat vs. roomba best. The picture it brings to mind is very funny.

utterly benighted

Like Wyoming, my state of residence, sigh. I will give a small bright spot, though I'm reluctant because our trolls always do this, and they are generally lying, but...

I went to our HR office to see my friend. She was out and I started talking to the clerical worker in the office who is an acquaintance, and a red Wyoming republican. I picked up her newspaper with Palin on the front, and she said! Oh! How stupid do they think we are? I am voting for Obama. I couldn't believed it! I generally don't start political conversations here, being much more blue than most of my colleagues, but wow! This is a 50+ white woman in Wyoming. Then two days ago I went to lunch with the HR friend and another friend, who goes to one of those evangelical churches. She said at lunch, well, looking at the choices, I have to vote for Obama. She voted TWICE for Bush (I know some people with be thinking, how can she be your friend, then? but she is really nice, and if I excluded Bush voters from my circle of friends, I'd be awfully lonely).

This is not a poll but wow. Just wow.

Korto

I really, really, wanted her to win, too. And I loved her clothes. But when Leane's came out, I thought, hmm, those look like actual designer clothes. As for Kenley, blah. I was ticked at Jerell (or however you spell it) for not getting into the finals.

But Leane is young, too, accomplished, skilled, and I can't be down on her for being happy. I just wish Korto could have won, too. Wasn't her family darling?

I love it when...

people make M. O'Donnell talk about Irish stuff. It's funny. Because everything, everything, EVERYTHING she writes is just...boring.

They fixed the AMT with the bailout, I believe. That was part of the increased price tag for the version which passed.

You are thinking about Finnish, not Norwegian. Norwegian is not too dissimilar to Swedish.

I have been thinking about this for a while

I think what may happen is that Sheriff's offices will begin to refuse to serve evictions for foreclosure. I think I saw a story about one city in the Midwest where that is beginning to happen. They may be looking at the danger to their officers, the expense of enforcing a private contract, even just because these will be friends and neighbors. Also, aren't Sheriffs elected in most parts of the country?

I am not sure what the consequences of this will be. Blackwater hired to enforce evictions, maybe, by big banks? I don't know. I think the situation is shaky and could get shakier.

fannie and freddie

So I thought the definition of subprime is "crap that fannie and freddie won't buy" (but will net the broker a big time commission and yield spread).

So I'm confused about why they are often mentioned together? Didn't subprime mortgages get bundled and sold as exotic investments with safe high yields to investors all over the world? Not bought by fannie and freddie?

Hmmm

I was very doubtful when I first heard about this. Too nicely arranged to hit a whole bunch of wingnut buttons.

Why didn't she scratch an "O", though? Then it wouldn't have been backwards.

But Amy

If a wickedly smart kid IS in the bottom 50% of his class, it likely has something to do with immaturity. I know people rage at the idea that you have to conform, but, you know, you pretty much have to. You have to get a job, and conform with employer expectations. If a kid has not yet been able to manage that at 17 or 18, then maybe community college, with a wider range of students and often, more support systems, might be a good choice while he or she grows up a little. Then the kid can transfer to a 4-year school.

Kids don't all mature at the same rate. Some are able to make themselves do the things they need to do to get good grades in high school, and some aren't. But why would we think the same wickedly smart kid is going to be able to make himself do the things they need to do in college, 3 months after they graduate from high school?

Human Power

OREGON is the most racist locale west of the Rockies? May I present...drum roll.....IDAHO?

(And perhaps Utah)

Or, since some of Idaho is mountainous, does it not count?

Because Idaho, and neo-nazis, and well, Mormons, I mean, dang.

Hey Doug,

I just want you to that I, and probably many others, automatically skip any letter that is written in all caps. From my experience, that is a prime marker of a right-wing nut job. (So is punctuation that is mainly ellipses, although I didn't look closely enough to see if that was the case with your letter). And then, as I scroll past in search of an interesting comment written by someone smart, and I notice that it's a really long screed, inexplicably changing from all caps right in the middle, then I know for sure that it's a cut-and-paste job from some nutter.

So I guess what I'm saying is, if you want anyone to know what think about something, you should try harder.
