I completely agree with Heather H. that Chloe was a bland and conventional choice. Although I'll go even further and say that not even Barbie's should be wearing her crap couture.
I suspect that, even though Michael Kors is a big ol' queen, there was a bit of latent self-censoring homophobia in the judge's decision. This is just a thought, but, perhaps, much like the Academy a few days earlier, they didn't want to risk looking too gay by having two 'mo winners in a row.
I am so very very tired of Stephanie Zacharek's tired ass reviews touting the benefits of tired old broads at the flicks. Being a woman in my thirties, I should find it empowering to see a movie critic shouting the praises of aging beauties but I just don't believe her. I don't think she really thinks Sharon Stone is as sexy as ever. I think she's got her own agenda that's writing these reviews for her. Maybe she's trying to convince herself of her own beauty and worth as she ages. How else are we to explain her eyeball bleeding word counts about every woman over the age of 40 in movies and how lush, confident and gorgeus she looks and how Hollywood just can't appreciate it and blah blah blah.
Don't get me wrong, I think the beauty standard could stand to be a bit less ageless in this culture but SZ's reviews mention it far too often for me to believe that she's not just happening to notice how hot an aging actress is rather than trying to convince herself of something. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look up any movie review in the Salon archives that features a woman over the age of 40 in it and check it out for yourself.
It's not that I don't appreciate her trying to draw attention to attractive older women, of which there are legions. I just want her to stick to her job and review the fucking movie already.
Sometimes I think Rebecca Traister could stand to be a little more snarky in her feminist commentary and at times her arguments are indeed a tad hyperbolic but I for one am glad she's around to point out aptly titled dumb crap like this Pete Bland guy's column.
That column WAS totally dumb (as is his stupid smug head shot next to it). Kudos to her for keeping us all on our toes about the fact that this kind of sexist crap is marketed to people everywhere like it's the god's honest truth about how men and women are in America. In reality it's nothing more than some dumbass's culturally manufacted opinion culled together from pop up ads for MSN Today, the Man Show, and any of the gender trend stories he's absorbed over the years.
The worst part about this trend piece from hades/advice column for the oblivious is that it will seep into the cultural zeitgeist and there are so many women out there that won't even realize that it has nothing to do with reality. And men too! I have talked to two different men in the past couple of weeks who were ridiculously stressed about the wife and kids they would have to take care of someday. I was like, huh? Are you for reals? I mean, who in the hell thinks let alone writes that men take care of women anymore? Now I know.
While I appreciate Salon's attempts to analyze this new low in the media coverage of a trial that marked new lows in media coverage, couldn't y'all at least have gotten a writer who didn't feel compelled to insert her own self indulgent, completely irrelevant, bitter comments every two sentences?
I frequently enjoy Salon's snarky opinion pieces on the more frivolous news stories in circulation but is it too much to ask for a bare minimum of editorial discipline? This essay lacked focus, a cohesive point of view and just plain SUCKED. It really isn't worthy of salon.
Heather Havrilesky would have been a better person to comment on Barack Obama than Debra Dickerson. Why does Salon give this woman a forum whatsoever? Last time I checked, ethnicity is based on skin color. I think it really is that simple.
This puts the nail in the coffin, I'm not renewing my premium subscription. If Salon wants to give people like Debra Dickerson a forum to spew their bitter hatred in, I might was well just read right wing blogs and not pay.
