  • I can't see much market

    [Read the article: Going mobile]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't see that there's much market for this sort of thing either. I know plenty of people who complain that they can't get a simple phone without a camera and all that other crap these days. Who is this thing really for? Maybe it will be a status thing, but people will quickly realize they have no need for all these functions and they will be stuck with a 2 year contract.

And who wants to watch video on a 3.5 inch screen anyway? All of these portable video devices seem very odd to me. Give me a giant screen to immerse in. I don't want to strain my eyes watching some teeny tiny little video.

  • MLS salaries

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I would be very surprised if average salaries in MLS are anywhere near $100K. Or maybe I am mixing up median and average... I suppose if you divide $2.2 million by 24 players on the roster you get about $100K. But there are lots of players making near the minimum of $12,000 and a couple of $250K players on each team. There are many more players closer to the bottom of the ladder than there are at the top. My guess is there will be lots of animosity over Beckham's $10million a year from the guys who are valuable starters in the league making $50K or so. And don't be too surprised if they decide to kick him...a lot.

  • hasn't worked in any other sport

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I would submit that the charge against cheating by diving/flopping hasn't worked yet in any of the other sports where it's been tried. The honchos at FIFA talk about getting diving out of soccer but woe unto the referee who actually has the cajones to deal with it. And that's a sport with 22 players against one referee and his two assistants. And again those players are way faster and can move the ball farther and faster than any referee can hope to really keep up with.

The NHL says that they are trying to work on the diving too, but these days they are so focused on the hooking and interference that the divers are being rewarded for the time being. You see a penalty for diving once every 3 or 4 games and you also get a penalty call to other team at the same time so they end up being offsetting. Why not give the diver a penalty but not give the other guy the hooking call?

I suppose when there is so much money at stake and winning at all costs is celebrated there is no such thing as sportsmanship or respect for "the game" left anymore.

On your other topic, the father of my college roommate played for the Browns and the Steelers in the 50s and early 60s. He had a massive championship ring on his hand to prove it. And he also had lots of trouble walking to prove it too. The poor guy's knees were pretty much wrecked. And in those days the protective equipment was nowhere near what it is today and neither was sports medicine.

  • cut off funding

[Read the article: The senators vs. the president]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Say the Congress cuts off funding. Then what? Bush has shown that he doesn't particularly care to obey the Constitution or any law anyway, so I'm sure he would figure some way around it.

  • I enjoyed it

[Read the article: Ask the pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I really liked this article and the one last week. I find this stuff very interesting. And yes, I am a big ol' homo! :-)

But seriously how do I book one of those bunks?

  • I don't get it

[Read the article: Ask the pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't understand why so many people write letters on Salon complaining that an article isn't about some "important" topic and that it's wasting space. Last time I checked this was a website, not a hard copy newspaper. There's virtually unlimited space here. If you're not interested in a particular article, don't read it! It's fairly simple.

  • don't forget the Danes

[Read the article: Reason 943 to love Sweden]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Denmark has also taken in lots of immigrants and they have the same sorts of problems the Finns, Germans, French, etc have been having. It's nice that the Swedes are taking in a larger number of Iraqis than we are. And I am sure life there is better than living in terror of being bombed or killed on a daily basis. But I doubt it is a bed of roses.

  • ahhh, SIGNing day...

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

at first I thought that said National SINGING Day. That might be a lot more interesting

  • Bill Donohue

[Read the article: Edwards campaign fires bloggers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Gee, Mr. Donohue has some nerve. He's an anti-gay Right wing trash talking bigot. So it's not like he's got a lot of room to critize anybody.

  • exactly

[Read the article: Climate change, the North Pole, and an imaginary Chinese navy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't think there's any dispute that the Chinese had a navy at the time. So it's hard to call it imaginary. Now, whether or not they discovered America is another story.

  • well

[Read the article: Wi-Fi in the land of Qin]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I suppose if you want to work for slave wages in indentured servitude in a pollution belching and leeching factory then you can have your free wifi in China to go along with it. The Chinese economy is resting on the frail backs of its slave workers supplying the West with all manner of cheap goods.
