blindness

Has Paterson been shown to be particularly bumbling or otherwise negatively effected by his blindness? I don't think so, but maybe I just don't know. I would say that if that is the case then it is probably fair game. But if SNL was just making fun of him being blind by introducing some sort of imagined characteristic that "all blind people must be bumblers, and therefore so is Paterson" then I think that is very offensive.

I don't recall anyone ever making fun of Dole's war wounds. The MacDonald imitation had him holding his arm still as Dole does but I think that was part of the overall imitation not something that was done to ridicule him.

a concern

I have been concerned about this as well. Taking so many senior people out of their old roles to serve in the administration means junior replacements and a loss of institutional knowledge.

darn right Fred

For sure it is too bad those Connecticut voters weren't smart enough to not vote for him in his last Senate election.

Maybe some one should launch a recall campaign.

misquoted??

I don't see how Warren, with a straight face, can claim to have been misquoted. I have seen the video clips with his bigoted words coming out of his very own mouth. Is he misquoting himself?

the Bible

Perhaps Pastor Rick ought to actually read this Bible thing he claims to believe in so much. How about the parts where certain individuals have several wives? Is that the 5000 year old definition of marriage he claims to be the only right one?

And anyway, like other people have said, what's religion got to do with it anyway? We're talking about civil marriage here not religious marriage.

"electoral experience"

Of course we all remember the vast amount of electoral experience HRC had before she became a Senator!

what about her?

I agree with the others. So, her FATHER said these things. Where are the quotes from her? Is it not possible to have an anti-semitic or racist parent but not be racist yourself?

Talk about guilt by association!

Egyptair

I kind of like the new Egyptair livery.

Everywhere I went in Southeast Asia right after the election people wanted to talk about Obama. The only skeptical voice I encountered was my tour guide in Southern Cambodia who reckoned Obama is just another politician.

"supporting actress"

Can anyone explain how it is determined whether a performance is "supporting" or not supporting...I guess that would be "leading"? How is Winslet only a "supporting actress" in The Reader when she is basically the only actress in the film and certainly one of the two central characters?

Science channel

The Discovery Science Channel has been running a very interesting program recently called Ecopolis. It looks ahead to 2050 and how our large cities are going to be swimming in pollution if we don't start making smart choices now. They then give four examples of technology that is either already being used on a small scale or is in development which will potentially make a huge difference in our carbon emissions as well as energy use, waste issues, transportation, etc. Many of the solutions are quite ingenious and we could start exploiting them right away if we had the will to start investing in them and changing the way we do things.

It is going to take leadership to get people to really open themselves to accepting the changes that are necessary. I hope we are ready to do so.

the pilot

I have not read much about the pilot. But is it surprising that some one with that much experience and seniority is flying what amounts to a regional flight LGA-CLT? Doesn't some one with his credentials usually get the plum international routes on the big aircraft?

Adam Elliot

Adam Elliot won the Oscar for his claymation short Harvie Krumpet a few years ago. So I assume the claymation in his new film is similar.

food court

The food court at Pentagon City...sorry, the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is very popular with the tour buses for some reason. I guess maybe it is the closest food court to DC or something.

swear (or affirm)

he really should have blown their minds and affirmed instead of swore and left out the "so help me god" business that isn't even part of the oath. That would have really set them all off their rockers.

2.9%

A 2.9% savings rate doesn't really sound like very much to me. How is that going to sink the economy?

Isn't the real problem that our economy relies too much on consumer spending?

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 12:43 PM

huh?

I'm not sure I understand what he is trying to say. If people with too much debt are spending less and paying down that debt how is it that they are going to end up more in debt? Is this some sort of giant macro-level thinking because some folks will lose jobs so on average debt will increase due to the people with no jobs? But for people who are still working how are they negatively effected by spending less and saving more? I suppose once inflation hits our saved money will be worth less, but what's the alternative? Are we all supposed to keep spending money we don't have? That isn't very sustainable is it?

retirement?

Lieberman's no spring chicken. 2012 is long time away. What are the chances he decides to retire instead of running again? Maybe it depends on how he is polling but I would have to guess that Lieberman would have a very hard time winning again after his antics over the last couple of years.

what's wrong with Euro socialism?

He says European socialism like it's a bad thing. For the most part people in Europe have a much higher quality of life and have for quite some time. Of course their aging populations are going to cause them enormous problems just like ours is.
