what's the real effect?

Just because Bush writes a "signing statement", so what? Does it become part of the law? Can the law itself as plainly written or as interpreted in light of the legislative history, only be interpreted in the manner the president wishes? Has the Supreme Court or any other court actually said that it cares how the president wishes he could interpret a law?

sodomy...

isn't just "ass sex" you know. There are all sorts of things that fall under sodomy.

hey

I like Chick-Fil-A sandwiches. I just had one for lunch today!

But I agree about all the noise. I generally just rev up my mp3 player and block it all out until it's almost time to board then I turn it off to hear their announcements.

Kobayashi!

There was a documentary on Mtv of all places recently about competitive eating. They followed Kobayashi around and showed his routine. It was quite interesting. The dude is in amazing physical condition and he works out in the gym a lot. He also "works out" doing practice eating which they showed him doing in a couple of restaurants going through his paces. I guess he got his start in Japanese contests and it is a big "sport" there. He also talked about his physiology and the fact that his stomach sits lower (I think) than most people so that allows for more expansion. I thought it was fascinating, and it doesn't hurt that he is so easy on the eyes. I would never want to participate in any of these contests, but I do think that he and Sonya Thomas are superhuman and I have a certain respect for what they do.

what do the people in the Pentagon really think?

I'm not sure there would be a military coup over a plan to attack Iran, but I do wonder what the generals and lower ranking officers in the Pentagon really think about this notion. Could we see mass resignations by military people who don't want anything to do with a reckless plan like this, especially after the last debacle?

With Bush's numbers down so far and with so many more people knowing about all of his lies going into the last war they will have a much harder time selling another one this time around. Congress rolled over and played dead before but I think there would be much more opposition, especially given the flimsy "evidence" put forth so far. And I think we will see a much more aggressive and skeptical press corps this time as well.

I'm not so sure that Iran is really anywhere near having nukes. I think it serves them for everyone to think they do as it gives them more leverage. And I suppose Bush wants everyone to think they are farther along than they really are so he can try and sell another war. The press certainly jumped all over the Iranian presentation last week and didn't seem to ask many skeptical questions about what the reality is.

OLN/CBC

I was wondering exactly what they were doing to the CBC picture. Why crop the HD feed? They could just show the regular feed instead. Only a few of the games are on the Comcast INHD channel, which is actully quite nice, but if they're not putting the game on there why bother with the HD feed at all?

I have the Center Ice package so I get to see the local coverage if it's not OLN's game. People with the package get the regular ol' CBC coverage for the Canadian games. It's a treat all season long actually. I pretty much only watch the Canadian games which are either Rogers Sportsnet, CBC, or TSN. I always groan when I tune in and even though there's a Canadian team playing they use the US team's local broadcaster instead. Luckily those occasions are few.

the American dream to live in debt

Indeed Lay's testimony does point out exactly what is wrong with so much of America. We are living beyond our means and are so addicted to the lifestyle that there's no way to stop it. I am more and more convinced that a new depression is on the way. We can't sustain this standard of living forever by generating more and more debt. When the depression does hit it will not be pretty at all. Once all of those ARM's start adjusting up, the people who bought real estate they couldn't afford are going to go into foreclosure and that will just be the beginning.

respect?

Maybe if Bush ever showed some respect for other people he would deserve some. I suppose you could argue that "the office" deserves some respect, but I'm not sure I necessarily agree with that either.

doesn't look good is an understatement

I guess maybe he just wanted some "cold, hard cash".

It's a shame this plays into the apathy of everyone who says "they're all a bunch of crooks and scoundrels." Unfortunately I think that's probably laregly true.

sounds like burn out

It seems to me that if the LW has been doing this job for 3 years now that s/he might very well just be burned out on this project. I have been involved with enough volunteer organizations to know that when the person in charge starts to think they are the only ones who know how to do something that it is one of the first signs of burning out. Maybe LW should just bow out of the whole yearbook thing if it is causing so much stress and find a new activity to get involved with. I liked the earlier suggestion of finding a volunteer group that will appreciate LW's help and work. A change of scenes might be called for.
