Original article: First Amendment martyr?

Bloggers are Journalists

I'm fed up with media types who claim that bloggers are not journalists

When free speech was originally litigated in this country, Zenger was more of a blogger than what today's cell-phone ad sellers would admit to their journalist's society

When the 1st amendment came in, the same thing

Some folks just love to parade their ignorance

Go Josh

So is Ireland a fascist state or what

are Irish people allowed to travel without taking a pregnancy test?

couldn't she just get on a plane and go wherever and do whatever?

am I missing something here?

Dumbest Rule in Basketball

Why can a team move the ball 3/4 of the court by calling time out?

Imagine the effect on football of a similar (unbelievably dumb) rule

The Flintstones was a documentary -- who knew

we have a few fundamentalists in the family but no one has asked them the dino question yet

Hey danmac

Uncle Meat on vinyl is much different than on CD

the CD adds an endless amount of pointless, unlistenable stuff from the movie of the same name

the vinyl was much shorter and all music

this was apparently the way FZ wanted the CD to be

on the Usenet Zappa group the term 'penalty tracks' was coined to explain this (it would be a single CD without the penalty tracks)

if I'm not mistaken the CD was remixed to no good effect as well

FZ has been dead for some time, maybe the original will come out

it was quite good, especially King Kong and Dog Breath

The next President

Will the next President:

be wiling to relinquish the powers claimed by this one

rely on signing statements to overrule Congress

get the PATRIOT act repealed

make war only after a declaration of war by Congress

arrange kidnappings all around the world

maintain secret prisons

renounce the idea of pre-emptive strikes

?

I wish I knew

I haven't seen any candidate that is above 1% in the polls make any sort of definitive statements like the above

if power corrupts, the next President is headed on a bad course already

Original article: Live-music dos and don'ts

Veteran artists know best

the last concert I saw was Lee Konitz & Dan Tepfer

small venue about 80 people

Konitz at 79 was in fine form on the sax

Saturday, my wife and I travel to Philly to see Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 -- hope that'll be fun

last year we saw

Gregory Isaacs

Maxi Priest

The I-Threes

Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars

they were all very good to exceptional

Seun Kuti may still be under 40 but he has been playing with Egypt 80 since Fela died in 1997

the Refugee All Stars are young but that was a free show and they are good

others all 45 +

Original article: "The Trap"

Curious Coincidences

I graduated a state college in 1971. Cost my father about $5000 for 4 years including room and board.

One semester costs about that much now

When I was there, I only knew of one black student on the whole campus, today it has a large minority population

I agree that Reagan (and the right in general) went after education after the 60s

and the racists too

Why educate a bunch of trouble makers and members of groups that aren't well liked

Since the average college graduate (even ones on the 6 year plan like my son) will live 50 or more years after college

it is possible to think of the incrementalist approach

When I was young, civil rights acts were passed, Medicare and Medicaid came in, Social Security was expanded, the draft was ended

Under the current administration, it is all wars and prison camps and secret police but voting may change that

as someone who swore off voting after 1984 and didn't pick it up again until 2000, I know that voting often seems to be a fraudulent exercise, but 'regime change' in the US is possible

The younger citizens do not vote in high percentages

but they could if they wanted to

This presents a middle ground between the duality of 'the trap'

and it wuld be easier to push Hillary or Barack or John than it is to push George

Escort Service?

On TV they keep calling it an escort service

is this just a euphemism?

if it is prostitution, they should say so

Disagree 100%

What the author calls 'wrecking' conservatism is actually conservatism in action

Criminals have too many rights

the police are handcuffed

this is what conservatives have been saying decades before 9/11

W just did something about it

what's good for General Motors is good for America

a well known right wing mantra

W scores big here

whatever W does, it it what the right has been trying t do for 50 years or more

I support GLBT rights 100% but

the Bible was misused with the shrimp eating comparison

that is from the Old Testament

so Christians can claim that those rules do not apply as Jesus brought a new covenant

however the New Testament contains Romans Chapter 1 which says that gays and lesbians are worthy of death

just the facts
