  • expose him

This "hunt" should be televised so that the nation can see how our VP gets his jollies: The birds are released from their cages, and as they try to fly away, they get blasted by Dick and his cronies. It's disgusting and inhumane, and totally senseless. Seeing this slaughter would expose Dick for the cruel, soul-less person he really is.

  • how many?

[Read the article: A job well done by Tom Tancredo]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

From an environmental standpoint, that is, creating a society that can live sustainably without damaging the environment, HOW MANY people can these United States absorb? We're at 300 million now. Mexico is experiencing a population explosion, and the US is feeling it. So, tell me, as a nation where an American uses 60 times the resources that a child in a third world country does, how many can the US absorb and turn into mega-consumers? HOW MANY?? When we're at a billion, will that be enough? When our farmlands are paved over to accomodate ever more strip centers and housing areas, will that be enough?? Gads, I wish this weren't a race issue, but a sustainability issue. I could care less if these illegals were Hispanic or Nordic, it is still extremely taxing to our natural resouces. And, how can we ever get a handle on it if we don't even have guts to address our own population numbers?

Second, Mexico relies heavily on the US absorbing millions of its citizens, and it is in the best interest of Mexico to have ever more Mexicans enter into this country-- that way, they don't have address their own corruption and incompetence for creating a society that would enable Mexicans to have a good life in their home country. Until this changes, and until the good Catholics of Mexico decide that having large families isn't in the best interest of planet Earth (hello, Pope, are you listening??) then the tidal wave of humans will come to this country.

  • wait a minute

Tancredo is opposed to ILLEGAL immigration-- that is the major thrust of his anger. You know, people breaking our laws when they come into our country for whatever reason, good or bad. How many times do those of us who oppose illegal immigration have to say ILLEGAL before you understand why we are so angry?? I have to obey the law, why shouldn't they?? God help me if I get a speeding ticket and don't pay it-- then there's a warrant out for my arrest. This is all about laws, not race. Either we obey the laws or we don't. I am forced to obey the laws, and those entering our country should have to abide by our laws, as well. Leave race out of it, I could care less if there were 20 million illegal Latinos or 20 million Swedes. They must abide by the laws of our land. And get this! I'm an Independent who voted a straight Democrat ticket for the last four presidential elections. Yes, we are out there, and we care deeply about the illegal immigration problem. Illegal-- the key word here.

Cary Tennis wrote the following when he was advising a reader; I thought it was so good, that I copied it for an ocassion such as this.

"There is also the matter of morality and principle. In principle, laws are good. They protect people and preserve order. In general, we ought to support the system of laws we live under, because it benefits us. There are rare cases where a law itself might be unjust and institutions deaf to demands for change; civil disobedience in such cases is a noble and sometimes inescapable act. But to disobey a law simply to make some money is a selfish act of disregard that achieves no greater aim. We ought instead to act in accordance with the laws so that when we need their protection we are fully deserving of it."

I couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you, Cary, for stating this so well.

  • I don't get it

I am really going to show my ignorance here:

Why didn't Clinton use all the plays used by the current administration so that he would never be on the hot seat? You know, like executive privileges, refusing to produce documents, not finding emails, pleading ignorance, etc. etc.

Absolutely NOTHING brings down the Bush administration, and that is astonishing. Where are the checks and balances?

Please educate me, because I am dumbfounded.

I've glanced at most of these posts, searching (but not finding) another important-- or perhaps THE most important-- thing we can do to reverse global warming:

Don't have more than two kids. Simple. Replace yourself and your partner, but no more than that. Eventually, the earth's population will stabilize (it will take a while, because the world's children haven't yet grown to reproductive maturity.) The most accepted scenario is that we'll stabilize at 16 billion people. Then, and only then, will we be able to truly take on this problem and reverse the trend.

    Choose two.

Does Obama write his own speeches? Specifically, the wonderful speech he gave after he won Iowa?

    Thanks

  • electability

[Read the article: Where would Clinton be without Edwards?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The hard right will never vote for ANY of the three Dem front runners. It's the "mushy middle" American vote that will swing this election in November. Remember, most Americans fall in the centrist group, and Edwards is the candidate that will appeal to most of the middle undecideds. Salon tends to trend far left, so of course Hillary will get a lot of support here. So, although Edwards is not the liberals first choice, he is the one that can win this thing, IF he gets on the ballot. You want to see the Repubs work together as never before? Put Clinton on the ballot. They won't be voting for their guy, they'll be voting against her. I work with these people. For some crazy reason, they think she is the devil incarnate, and while it is sad and undeserved, it is reality.

Edwards will have a harder time making it on the Dem ticket than he will have making it into the White House if he does.
