Just a thought
[Read the article: Study shows immigrants assimilating faster than in past]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]There are many of us who are opposed to illegal immigration-- empahsis on the word "illegal." You know, breaking the law? But Salon typically bypasses that all-important word-- I guess because it's more fun to call those of us "racist."
Hey, I have to live by the laws of the land, why don't they? And that is truly the crux of the matter. My non-republican friends feel the same way-- we all have to live by the law, so illegal immigrants should be no exception. And, it is breeding resentment here in Texas, where illegals are literally everywhere.
Over 70 percent of Americans are opposed to illegal immigration because it violates the laws of the land. Nothing racial about it, but it quickly become that way, as most illegals are Mexicans. Illegal immigration spits in the face of those who endure the long lines and endless paperwork to enter the country legally.
Did you know that recently the Mexican government stepped up its efforts along their southern border to stop middle and south Americans from crossing Mexico to enter the United States? Could it possibly be that they don't want the competition from those other countries who have so many poor people? You tell me why they stepped up this border protection.
Yes, I am going to be hammered because of this post. I'll be called racist, too, no doubt. But ultimately, I'm a person who cares deeply about the environment, and I understand that this country, my country, cannot continuously absorb other nation's population explosions. We can't, but we will. So, move over, pave over more land, and make room for the endless supply humans headed this way.

that cooking comment
[Read the article: "Sex and the City"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Carrie cannot even cook, the most basic requirement for adulthood."
That is a ridiculous statement. Sure, most adults know how to cook, but for those of us who have non-conventional lives, knowing how to cook is not a necessity. (Granted, it's cheaper, but not very convenient.) For example, my sister and I (she doesn't cook, either) have a horse rescue operation, in addition to our full time jobs. When we have "free" time, we're usually trimming hooves, or fixing fences, or spending time with formerly abused horses. Sooooo, when we go into our respective homes, do we cook????? Hell, no! We sleep!
Hmmph. So, you have your adulthood, I have mine. But, I also have a barnful of happy horses, so it's a fine tradeoff in my book.

Bombs away
[Read the article: Who will Obama choose as veep? Nope, you're wrong]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Even though I'm gonna get blasted, I'm going to say this:
In order to win, Obama must select a white male with military/and or gov't experience (the real flag waving, patriotic poster boy kind of guy). Salonistas are open minded, totally OK with the idea of a black male/female, black male/black male, or black male/hispanic male on the ticket. I have a sad feeling in my gut that mushy, middle America would feel VERY uneasy with this arrangement. At this point, whites are still a majority, and that will certainly change over time. BUT IF WE WANT THE REPUGS TO LOSE this time around, we can't, simply can't experiment with a double minority ticket, because we will LOSE. You want another four years of this crap? Then put Richardson or a woman on the ticket.
Sorry, folks, Salon readers are not the majority in this nation. I wish it were true, but it's not.

WHAT??
[Read the article: McCain's new ad goes green]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The League of Conservation Voter (LCV), the environmental watchdog group for our congressman and senators, rates John McCain a ZERO. That's right, you'd have to search far and wide to find another representative that scores as low as he does. So, for him to declare himself green is more than a joke, it's a travesty. The Dems need to pounce on his record to expose him for what he is: a LIAR.
His stance on global warming is merely words. When push comes to shove, he will side with polluters every time. Look at his record (google LCV, then follow the links on how he, and your representatives, voted on environmental issues.)

Whew.
[Read the article: Barack by the books]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm exhausted. Reading the previous posts leaves me feeling, well, uneducated. Even though I have a BS in Geology, and two years of grad work, history and English were not my forte. ERGO, I hesitantly type (not really), wondering with each stroke whether or not my diction (har har), spelling, grammar, and whatever else I do wrong will tweak a reader into taking my post apart, piece by piece. Mea culpa.
Changing gears here, I humbly ask this: Why, oh why, didn't John Edwards ever get his due? The man amazed me, with his passion, his intellect, his heart, his candor, his amazing wife, and his sensibility on so many issues. Was he politically sexy like Obama? No, but he had something that just grabbed me and made me sit up and listen. It was a sad day for me, when it came time for the Texas primaries, to decide between Hillary and Obama, when Edwards' name was still on the ballot.
Oh, well, make fun of Edward's (apostrophe before or after the s??) haircut fiasco, but I will always think of him as the greateast president we could have had, but chose the rock star instead.
Too bad.
