Compare Edwards to Nader
[Read the article: When principles aren't enough]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Edwards' speeches are, I imagine, very similar in tone and perhaps even moral content to the statements he made in the courtroom prosecuting some of the same corporate interests he speaks against now. I suppose his supporters would cite this as an example of his experience on the issue and as a testament to his commitment to the little guy. I wonder if it isn't more out of expediency that he has transferred this message to his run for national office. After all, he has spent years perfecting his ability to deliver just such a message in the courtroom. It has brought him wealth, notoriety, and the freedom to run for president. But what else has Edwards done for the poor and disadvantaged of this country besides prosecute lawsuits on their behalf that enriched him? Ralph Nader, who also had a thing or two to say about corporate interests, had a lifelong record fighting for the little guy, not to enrich himself, but to advocate for justice. Edwards' speaks a good game but his record on the issue pales in comparison.
Moreover, given that experience has been and will likely remain an important issue in this campaign, where is Edwards experience? He has far less political experience than either Obama or Clinton.
I believe beneath Edwards' soulful message is bare, neked ambition and I think he's going to hold on to this race until either there's no place left to go or until someone offers him what he wants--a position of power.
