I Took a Breather
[Read the article: To spank or not to spank?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]and should follow up that last post, 'cause I was ranting.
I had a discussion with a friend in the mid-90's about drunk driving legislation. He was in favor of zero-tolerance and all that good stuff, and I was more conservative. After he'd made his case for why it should be a one-strike crime, I said that we could only have the conversation because it wasn't one already. He asked why, and I pointed out that if folks like him had had their way, we'd both have been in prison. That was the end of the conversation.
Careful, everybody.

[Read the article: A rose is a rose is a rose ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Right on.
The posters are the wrong form of genital mutilation to be emphasizing. The flowers should have huge gouges out of them, and obviously haphazard stitching at bad angles.
Good idea, but way too tame. It's not a strong enough distinction between what's visually represented here and something as trivial as removing a foreskin. For example.

What are they Watching, Exactly?
[Read the article: India's cosmopolitan-sipping singles]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Soap operas and "Sex in the City," are so incredibly fundamentally different in a major way.
In soaps, men are important characters, even though there aren't many big (in the dialogue sense) parts for them.
In SitC, men are props.
Just curious. I can't read the study.

Ever Worry
[Read the article: Is rape off-limits for laughs?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]about how much attention that skit has now gotten because of criticism of it?
It sucked. We should try to use good skits to quibble over.
How about, "Jane, you ignorant slut," on the SNL re-run? Or uncle Danny telling Gilda and Jane to "work the pants"?

Well, Hell, Let's Game it Out
[Read the article: Boys in the girls room, oh my!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]So the law passes using some vague terminology about gender identity.
Some smart-ass sophomore boy decides that his life sucks enough anyway, so he may as well get to see some titty, and claims he's woman in a boy's body, and needs to use the girl's locker room.
This punk is not only a smart-ass, but also has balls, so he fights his way into court.
What happens next?
I think the terms should probably be clarified. It might be necessary to provide for a personal privacy partition for any student who wanted it, no matter which room they end up in, and which junk they got.

Nice Post
[Read the article: Is RU-486 a murder weapon?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Good stuff, leftychris. I think you nailed that.
Is aggravated assault "better" or "worse" than assault with a deadly weapon?
If assault with a deadly weapon is considered the more serious offense, I'd strongly advocate charging all involuntary druggings that way.

Anyone who enjoys this discussion
[Read the article: "Love and Sex With Robots"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]might be interested in reading the Hyperion books. (I forget the author.) Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion (I think) told a fascinating story about AI and humanity.
Anyway, I'm kinda of the opinion that this is old news and has already occurred.
We've all seen people "plugged in" to their video game consoles, TiVos and DVD players.
What's the difference?

@ Nulla Sallus
[Read the article: Facebook caves on privacy-invading ads, kind of]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I happen to agree with you in perspective, but disagree vigorously on conclusion.
Yes, it IS "like it or lump it" when it comes to crappy services.
But the option does exist to pay more for good service, and that's where we differ.
Everyone who pisses and moans about lousy service at Home Depot has the option of going somewhere else and paying hecka lot more. You can gripe about cable TV, or you can sign up for the premium channels and watch those instead.
I see it as just a different aspect of "the race to the bottom" that capitalism requires. What are you, an anti-capitalist?
Er...well, I guess I am.

I Was One of those Guys!
[Read the article: If the first date isn't great, why go out with him again? ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Well, not actually, but pretty close. I decided to try a few setup dates (not online, but same idea) and both times got a nice date with an attractive woman who told me after our first outing that she wasn't feeling it, so not to bother again.
What I wonder here is if the LW "knew" the first time she met other people she had good relationships with.
Did she "feel sparks" with her (now ex-) husband when she first met him? Past boyfriends? Is her relationship experience such that she should EXPECT to know "he's a good guy for me" inside of a few hours?
If she has a history of knowing right away about who she should date and being right, then her current strategy is probably fine.
If she only started relationships with her exes after knowing them for awhile, then I'd say it's pretty silly to expect one date to show the signals immediately which took weeks/months in her past relationships.
Trying to fantasize about making out with someone just minutes into the date is not going to be the best indicator of whether you'd be compatible or happy together.
Not even to mention that these days, guys (if they're at all "sensitive") are NOT thinking about sex on the first date if they're actually looking for a relationship. They're not going to be focusing on the whole "physical" component of things the first time they meet you. That may not improve their attractiveness.
