  • Of Course it was Sexist

[Read the article: Diamonds and pearls and the b-word]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

And thank heavens it was a female asking the question, demonstrating (yet again) that women, even for all the vaunted advances of feminism in the past century, are still just as sexist as "the public at large."

There are several aspects of Hillary's campaign which are completely devoted to maintaining some public attention on Hillary's gender, and that also is sexist.

Certainly not as sexist than any male candidate who might worry that a woman can't do that job, but sexist even so.

None of this should be any kind of surprise. We're an inherently sexist species. It's going to take a bit longer than 100 years to beat all these "natural" inclinations out of our systems.

  • For Reference's Sake...

[Read the article: Diamonds and pearls and the b-word]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I just want to point that "sexism" should not be understood to mean: "male dominance of women," or "male attacks against women."

    That's misogyny, not sexism.

Sexism, properly understood, refers to the judgement of other human beings as products of their gender/sex.

There's no lack of "sexism" in any political candidate's campaign right now. And in fact, for as long as I've been able to observe and comprehend the American political system, sexism has been an _important_ element of every national campaign I've examined.

I give. You're right. Hiring a lawyer to discuss legal options against the airline after her treatment it not indicative of a desire on her part to sue for money.

I hire lawyers to discuss legal options against businesses I buy products/services from all the time. And I've never "planned to sue." I'm sure this is true of the majority of Americans. How many times have you done it, fetboy?

Not to neglect her response on Oprah when she was asked if she'd be happy to forget about the whole thing (this occurred after she hired a lawyer but before she'd decided not to sue). Although she didn't answer that question with the resounding "no" that one would expect from a person who had no intention of suing anyone, she hedged with the shrewdness any reasonable person with no desire to sue would employ.

Regardless, Ebberts has benefited dramatically from the national attention her provocative outfit won her. While I stand corrected regarding her legal strategies, I steadfastly maintain the opinion that she's a joke. Ain't no principles she's representing that could help make the world a better place.

  • The Threat of Fatality

[Read the article: Saudi rape victim punished, again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Was brought up not long ago in another Saudi case that received international reportage.

    London - 19 October 2007

Fifty people picketed the Saudi Arabian Embassy in London today, 19 October, in protest at the flogging and execution of gay people.

To download free use photos of the protest, click here:

    Saudi protest, 19 October 2007

On the 2 October, two young men in the Saudi Arabian city of Al-Bahah were convicted of 'sodomy' and sentenced to 7,000 lashes. In Saudi Arabia same-sex relations are illegal and the maximum penalty is death.

There's a voice of moderation on the side of Saudi sentences. Perhaps if not all the lashes are delivered at once, there would be less risk of death.

What is your problem? Are you all right?

Settle down. Easy there. Relax. I'm not out to get you, as much as you seem to want that.

I'll keep posting my opinions here, and if you disagree with me, you could feel free to explain why/how, but ease up. Nothing here is worth baring your teeth for.

  • Not to Say...

[Read the article: The Tom Friedman of 2002 has not gone anywhere]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Not to say that Friedman's a racist, because I really don't know if he hates Arabs or not, but just for predictive purposes...

Most of Friedman's pro-war perspective can be anticipated (even predicted) if you take for granted the idea that he's a racist who hates Arabs.

Again--whether he actually IS such a person, I make no claim to know. I can only point out that if you read everything he's written over the past few years, and observed him in some interviews on the subject, it all "fits" really well.

  • The Point to Harp On

[Read the article: Kerry takes on the Swift Boat Veterans]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Is that ole T-Boone has already retracted his original challenge and replaced it with one specifically designed to be distasteful to Kerry, the guy who took him up on his challenge.

What a coward. What a sniveling, backpedaling swine.

"I'll give ya a meellion dollars if ya prove anything these guys said is false."

    "OK. Get your checkbook out."

"I meant, I'll give ya a meellion dollars if ya publish your daily journal of the entire time you served."

Good grief. This is why it's not worth "lowering yourself to their level."

Every time you submerge yourself in the filth on the ground, these guys wriggle deeper into a pool of offal and say you have to follow them.

  • Sorry, fetboy.

    You're insane.

Post what you like, but based on that last little insight into your mind, I'd advocate banning you for awhile.

I hope you can find peace.

  • The World's a Big Place

[Read the article: Miss Landmine 2008]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Who'd a thunk it?

I think it's pretty neat. It looked to me like folks were having fun, and that's enough of a return on a beauty pageant, as far as I can tell.

How fascinating and strange. What a peculiar piece of culture to collide. Land mines and beauty pageants.

  • First Class-Action Suit?

[Read the article: Colorado: Human rights for eggs]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Could a criminal reasonably request leniency in sentencing because s/he was acting illegally to save zygotes?

Can zygotes hold copyrights or patents? What about real estate?

What are the tax liabilities of zygotes? Do they need social security numbers?

How will zygotes give testimony in court cases? Or, for that matter, show up for jury duty?

And how long will it take before millions of zygotes bring their first class-action lawsuit?

I sure am glad we got a guy like Mukasey on the case!
